Haugland Scores Twice in Crusaders 4-2 Victory Over St. Thomas (TX)
HOUSTON, Texas – The University of Dallas men's soccer team outdueled University of St. Thomas (TX) 4-2 on Friday evening in the first ever meeting. Hunter Haugland (Bixby, Okla.) kept up the hot play as of late by scoring two of the team's goals. UST (3-4) outshot the Crusaders 18-16 on the evening but could not get any late goals past Caleb Strange (Argyle, Texas). Chima Ogueri (Garland, Texas) put Dallas (2-4) on the board just minutes into the game, while Carlo Scarmardo (Copper Canyon, Texas) scored the final goal for an all-around Crusaders victory.
The Celts came out ready to play from the first whistle after they took two shots within the first three minutes of the match. UD then grabbed some offensive possession as Ogueri put the first Dallas shot on goal at the 5:40 mark, but the Celts goalie made the save. A minute later Ogueri found another chance off the Celts turnover at the top of the box as he was able to beat the keeper with a nice strike to make an early statement. UST kept firing shots, but nothing came of it. In the 29th minute Haugland found the back of the net from the close right wing after Chase Reynolds (Southlake, Texas) set him up perfectly. Dallas would take a 2-0 lead into the halftime break with an 8-7 advantage on shots in that half.
Dallas came out of the break fired up and hungry for more. 46 seconds into the second half the Celts turned the ball over in the box and Haugland was able to possess the ball and score his second goal of the game. This marked Haugland's second multi-score game in the past three games to put UD up 3-0 and in complete control. But the Celts gained some momentum in the 62nd minute when a foul in the box led to a penalty kick. Carlos Marquez converted the attempt for his third goal on the season and put UST on the board.
Both teams traded shots on goal at this point in the game, but the keepers kept everything out of the net. In the 73rd minute Heiko Leinweber drilled a shot from 35 yards out to beat the Dallas keeper and make it a 3-2 game. The Celts kept this momentum going with three strikes towards the goal, but only one was close. Strange stayed calm under pressure in the final minutes shutting down everything that came his way. Under a minutes left in regulation Scarmardo added some insurance with his first career goal on an assist from Tomas DePetris (Houston, Texas). Strange then made one final save as the clocked ticked down to leave Houston with the win.
DePetris, Ogueri, and Haugland all led Dallas with three shots each as DePetris put all of his attempts on frame. Carlos Trevino (Southlake, Texas) and Nicholas Vega (Dallas, Texas) both added two shots. Strange made six saves on the evening playing all 90 minutes in goal. UD placed 11 of its 16 shots on frame.
UST took 11 of its total shots in the second half. Two Celts led the team with three shots each. Pedro Medrano notched seven saves in the team's loss.
Haugland has now scored five goals in the past three games and boosted his points total to 12 on the season.
Coach David Hoffmann collected his 150th career win with the win. Hoffmann, who ranks atop the program for all-time victories, is now 150-124-21 all-time as the Dallas coach.
