Martinez's Late Goal in the 89th Minute Pushes Crusaders Past Gents

SHREVEPORT, La. – The University of Dallas men's soccer team won a 1-0 thriller against Centenary College of Louisiana on Tuesday evening at C.E. Byrd H.S. The Crusaders (2-2, 1-1 SCAC) were able to even its record back to .500 on the season. Jose Martinez (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) broke the scoreless tie in the 89th minute to put the Crusaders up 1-0 and be the difference in the match to give Dallas its first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) win on the year.

In a game that featured 41 total shots, only one found the back of the net. Martinez ripped the ball from the center part of the field which hit off the post and into the goal for his first goal on the season with 1:33 left in regulation. Martinez had three shots in the game with two of them being on frame. This marked the third time in three games that the Crusaders' match was decided by one goal.

The Gents (1-3-1, 0-2-1 SCAC) did not make it easy on Sean Carlin (Puyallup, Wash.) in goal after they had 10 shots taken, four of them on goal. The Gents had a good shot on goal in the 87th minute saved by the goalkeeper right before the Crusaders broke the tie. Carlin had four saves playing all 90 minutes for the Crusaders in goal.

Dallas took a season-high 31 shots on the night, putting nine on goal. Nine different Crusaders took shots in Tuesday's contest. Chase Reynolds (Southlake, Texas) led the Crusaders with eight shots, followed by Hunter Haugland (Bixby, Okla.) with six, and Brady McNamara (San Antonio, Texas) with four. Haugland had three of his shots on goal, while McNamara had one, making Sami Borchalli work hard in goal. Borchalli made a season-high eight saves in Tuesday's match.

Gabe Rodriguez and Nick Hammond led the Gents with two shots taken each. Eight different players for Centenary had shots taken in the stat line. All three loses for the Gents in 2018 have been decided by one goal.

Dallas has now won the past eight matchups against Centenary.
