Shot in Closing Seconds downs Men's Soccer at Howard Payne in Double OT

BROWNWOOD, Texas – For consecutive days the University of Dallas men's soccer team found itself playing in overtime. It appeared to be déjà vu for the Crusaders with the first goal of the match at Howard Payne University early in the opening half on Saturday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets countered with an equalizer in the second frame, and then the squads went to overtime. Unlike Dallas' (1-1) heroics less than 24 hours ago by Nat Kajiwara (Southlake, Texas), it was the opposition getting to celebrate on a golden goal by HPU's (1-0) Roger Bonilla as time ticked off the clock in the second overtime.
Dallas got on the board around 10 minutes into the opening stanza as Tomas DePetris (Houston, Texas) buried his first collegiate goal on a free kick. The freshman now has three points after garnering an assist on Friday.
Both sides had about even chances in the first, with UD slightly leading in shot attempts by one (5-4). The remainder of the match, the guests appeared to have the momentum with an 11-6 edge in chances to end things 16-10 overall. This included a 7-3 difference in the second half.
It was Howard Payne that successfully got one of those shots in the back netting in the later 90-minute frame, as Jonpaul Vargas equalized the match at the 60:12 minute mark on a pass from Dylan Person.
The first overtime favored UD with both shots taken by the navy and white. Hunter Haugland (Bixby, Okla.) placed a shot on goal with Howard Payne's goalkeeper Andrew Hackney made the stop. He had four saves and didn't allow a goal in 64:59 minutes for the win. The other shot was by Brady McNamara (San Antonio, Texas) in the 97th minute and went wide right. Each squad had a corner kick in the first extra period, but neither materialized into anything. Dallas took eight corners, with five in the second half. HPU earned three, and both of those last ones mentioned above were the final takes the rest of the way.
In the second overtime the Crusaders got another pair of shots. An early chance by Chase Reynolds (Southlake, Texas) veered right and Luke Schwarz (Tucson, Ariz.) was thwarted by Hackney on a save at the 105:2 mark after taking a set piece that came from a yellow card on Vargas.
It was the Yellow Jackets that mustered the final offensive attempts with a trio of shots for the first time since the game-tying goal. Tracer Moore and Vargas pounded a pair of attempts within 20 seconds of each other in the 108th minute that were turned away by Caleb Strange (Argyle, Texas). Strange could not quite get the last ball that Daniel Lemus setup with a pass to Bonilla as the final seconds on the time ticked down in the second overtime and gave the home team a season-opening victory.
Strange entered late in the first half and compiled three saves against five shots in 68:39 minutes in his collegiate debut. Reynolds etched a game-high four shots. A.J. Zaugg (Dallas, Texas) and Andrew Ciancone (Houston, Texas) added a pair of shots and landed one shot on target apiece. Both teams had six shots on goal overall.
After opening the campaign with their first overtime match since 2007 (0-0 vs. Austin College), the Crusaders posted back-to-back contests that went beyond 90 minutes for the second time since 2002. The other occasion was in 2003 when Dallas prevailed 2-1 on August 31st versus University of Texas Permian Basin and then tied Schreiner University 1-1 on September 1st. One difference was both those matches were at home for UD, while this setback was the team's first road match of the season.
The Crusaders have played four of their last five overtime games away from Irving dating back to last year. Saturday's match moved UD to 2-1-2 in that entire span. This includes last season's Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) quarterfinal with Texas Lutheran University that was a tie and went to penalty kicks to determine advancement.

Dallas will have a good deal of traveling over the next two weeks as it continues a season-long four-game road stint. Next up is the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) opener at Colorado College on Sept. 8th. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m. (MST).
