Cornell tops Crusaders on Wednesday Afternoon

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas men's lacrosse team came up short, 14-9, to Cornell College on slippery field on Wednesday afternoon. The Crusaders (2-5) were outdone by two-goal differences in the first and fourth quarters that helped seal this match away.

An early goal by Austin Gibbons (St. Charles, Ill.) put Dallas in front the only time in the game. That lead lasted 31 seconds, as Brendan Langmack leveled the score at 13:11. John Linderman had a pair of the team's next three goals to help bolster a 4-0 run. Brodie Veweg netted the other goal in the stanza.

Ben Blessard (Falls Church, Va.) ended the scoring streak with four minutes to go, as Jake Frederick (Coppell, Texas) assisted the goal.

In the second frame, Dallas answered a scoring play by the Rams (1-1) on two occasions to keep it a two-goal deficit. Tucker Jameson (Mechanicsville, Md.) posted his second goal of the quarter to slice the margin to 6-5. Goals by Jack Bilenduke and Vieweg sent the Cornell advantage to 8-5 into halftime. The first goal by those two occurred eight seconds from the faceoff and stymied UD's momentum.

Both sides had three goals in the third quarter. Tyler Smith (Snoqualmie, Wash.) got a goal assisted by Blessard at 12:59. Cornell answered each attack by the Crusaders to keep the margin at three goals by the end of the frame and no closer than two the rest of the way. Frederick and Gibbons posted unassisted goals for UD in the frame. The first countered goal by the Rams was the team's second man-up goal of the contest.

Chasen Reynolds (Fallbrook, Calif.) scored a second time this game in the fourth goal for Dallas' lone one, but came late in the fourth with under four minutes to play. Two goals by the Rams followed to polish off their first win of 2019.

Jameson, Reynolds, and Gibbons were the multi-scoring players for Dallas, while Frederick earned a team-high three points with two helpers to go with his goal. The team placed 20 of its 23 shot attempts on cage. The Crusaders were edged 48-39 on ground balls.

Dallas was forced into 28 turnovers with six in the first two quarters and eight in the last two quarters. Cornell committed 22 turnovers. Both sides had 23 successful clears.

The Rams accumulated 47 shots and went 20-for-26 in the faceoff circle. George Ziama had a 17-for-22 showing there.

Bilenduke and Langmack matched a game-high four goals each, with Bilenduke securing the most points (5) by either side on an assist. Vieweg notched the other hat trick with three goals. Kyle Jussila and Ziama were two players without a goal but had the multi-assist games with two.

Dallas' Hector Pinell-Sanchez (Manor, Texas) was saddled with the loss in his first collegiate goalkeeper decision. Making his first start, the keeper delivered 60 minutes in a muddy crease that amounted to 17 saves against 31 shots faced. He picked up a game-high nine ground balls.

Quinten Howe garnered 11 saves against 20 shots faced in 60 minutes to earn the win as goalkeeper.
