Reynolds Wins OT Thriller for Men's Lacrosse at Becker
LEICESTER, Mass. – With 3:33 left in the first overtime, Chasen Reynolds (Fallbrook, Calif.) punched in the game-winning goal on a pass from Peter Early (San Antonio, Texas) to lift the University of Dallas men's lacrosse team over Becker College, 6-5.
It was a seesaw battle at Alumni Field on Saturday afternoon that included the Crusaders countering a brief deficit with three straight goals in a row. The Hawks answered right back with a trio of their own spanning over halfway through the third quarter. Two man-up goals by Jack Schneider in the second and Matthew Guerin at 7:16 in the third knotted the match again.
With just over five to play that same stanza, Cruz Desrochers shot the go-ahead goal at the time on an assist from Guerin.
After going nearly 30 minutes without hitting the back of the cage, J.P. Hasson (Fairfax, Va.) shot found the twine with about a minute remaining. Tucker Jameson (Mechanicsville, Md.) was good for his second assist on that sequence. Joshua McClendon (Redondo Beach, Calif.) sent the Crusaders into the last quarter of regulation up 5-4, after his fourth goal on the road counted in the expiring seconds.
Becker was able to get an equalizer four minutes into the next frame by Guerin – who had a game-high three points.
Faced with extra time for the first time in program history, UD remained poised until Reynolds was able to connect on his second goal of the game. His game-winner also sent the Crusaders to their program-best sixth win of the campaign. The one-goal win was also the first time UD had won by that margin. Previously the team was 0-2 in such types of games.
Early's assist extended his career school record to 26. It also pushed his all-time points record to 74. Head Coach Sam Ashton is now tied for the coaching wins record in his second season after UD prevailed just two times in 2017.
Dallas was outshot 43-29, but did take the lone attempt in overtime. Tyler Smith (Snoqualmie, Wash.) garnered a team-high eight shots and hit six on target. He did score on a man-up during the team's early scoring surge. Cole Griffin (Lucas, Texas) posted the other netter on what was the first scoring result for the guests. Jameson etched his first assist then.
Bogar Trout III (Tecumseh, Mich.) led UD with five groundballs.
Christian Lopez (Las Vegas, Nev.) made 11 saves against 16 shots faced in 64 minutes. Trey McMillen snagged 12 stops against 18 shots in that same amount of time.
The Hawks fell to 1-6 overall.
Faceoff wins were even at seven with both teams winning half the chances. The Crusaders went 18-of-21 in successful clears, while their opponent was 20-of-24.
