Men's Lacrosse captures Road Win behind Great 2nd Half
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The University of Dallas men's lacrosse team outscored Fontbonne University 12-3 after being deadlocked at halftime to pull away 17-8 on a rainy afternoon at Centene Stadium.
With things evened 2-2 after one quarter, the Griffins (0-2) answered a goal by Chasen Reynolds (Fallbrook, Calif.) with three straight to take a 5-3 advantage. Dallas (2-1) responded with five goals in a row spanning 19 minutes over two halves to produce the largest lead by either side at the time. This included the first four in the third quarter, which changed the advantage for UD the rest of the way.
J.P. Hasson (Fairfax, Va.) matched a season-high nine shots, but was able to notch a personal-best five goals with seven shots on cage. Tyler Smith (Snoqualmie, Wash.) tied a career-high four goals, while Tucker Jameson (Mechanicsville, Md.) claimed his first collegiate hat trick to complete the trio earned by the Crusaders.
Jake Frederick (Coppell, Texas) tallied six points behind a pair of goals and game-high four assists. Altogether Dallas shared the ball for 11 assists, which tied the second highest total in a game in the program's history.
The Griffins struck first at 11:16 on a scoring result by Cameron Director. Jameson and Smith responded to each single-goal deficit in the first. Peter Early (San Antonio, Texas) assisted both UD goals that helped knot the game at 2 through 15 minutes.
Michael Picciolo garnered a quick hat trick with all three goals for Fontbonne in the second quarter in response to the 3-2 deficit.
Down a pair with under six minutes, the Crusaders took advantage of two man-up goals scored by Jameson (5:19) and Smith (3:01). Hasson and Frederick came up with the respective helpers.
Early then lifted Dallas to its second edge all game a minute into the second half. Smith punched the first hat trick by his squad and second of the day on a man-up goal. Alex Graham (League City, Texas) and Hasson followed to stretch the lead to four (9-5).
A penalty under a minute helped the Griffins halt the run, and Director claimed the other hat trick for the home team to make it a 9-7 game. The Crusaders countered on three goals and put the game out of reach by pouring five goals the final 8:50 minutes. Hasson was responsible for three goals in that span.
Despite being outshot 36-32, the Crusaders held a 25-19 shots on goal advantage. The team won more groundballs 41-32, with a 26-13 edge in the second. They were 22-for-28 in faceoffs.
Christian Lopez (Las Vegas, Nev.) came away with 11 saves in a complete game. He had five in the first quarter. His counterpart Nick Fresta made eight saves.
The scoring output was the third most in program history. The record 22 goals on April 11th, 2012 versus Centenary College was the last time UD eclipsed 17. The second highest total is 19 in a road victory at Marymount College (CA) during the inaugural season in 2011. That match, the Crusaders dished 14 assists for the most in a match.
Dallas has only won consecutive games three times. The last time back-to-back victories happened was in 2015 at Centenary College (10-8) and Dallas Baptist University (13-1) near the end of March.
