Men's Lacrosse drops Season Opener to Huntingdon
IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas men's lacrosse team was defeated 10-5 in its season opener to Huntingdon College. A 7-1 advantage through the early part of the third quarter was enough to carry the Hawks to a 1-0 start in their opener for the season, too.
UD tallied the final three goals of the game to close the margin to five, but the deficit was too large.
The game started with Huntingdon winning the faceoff, but were held without shot for two minutes due to the Crusaders hard defense. After an early shot clock was turned on, Austen Saucier launched the first shot of the game that hit the post. The next shot by Bryce Coates found the back of the cage and lifted Huntingdon to a lead that was not surrendered.
Seconds later Coates was able to notch a quick goal to double that lead. After two more goals for the guests, Tyler Smith (Snoqualmie, Wash.) netted UD's first goal of the campaign with 2:20 left in the first.
Dallas trailed 6-1 at halftime, and did not score again until Jake Frederick (Coppell, Texas) scored a man-up goal with 4:42 remaining in the third. Three more goals in the early part of the fourth moved Huntingdon up 10-2, but Smith's second goal of the match started a three-goal UD streak that countered the opponent. Peter Early (San Antonio, Texas) and Chasen Reynolds (Fallbrook, Calif.) had the other scoring plays.
Smith finished with three points after earning an assist on the last goal scored by Dallas. He also was perfect with both shot attempts on target. Frederick and Early also had assists to give them two points. J.P. Hasson (Fairfax, Va.) earned his first collegiate point on an assist during that late run.
Christian Lopez (Las Vegas, Nev.) registered nine saves in 60 minutes between the pipes.
The Hawks had five players finish with multiple goals led by Coates' hat trick. Harper, Kendrick Ballard, Seth Howe, and Caleb Bohrer also found the scoring column twice. Matt Murphy made six saves against 11 shots faced in a full 60 minutes.
