Men's Lacrosse Unable to keep up with Fontbonne on Saturday

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The University of Dallas men's lacrosse team (5-11) fell in its sixth-straight outing, with the most recent outing a 27-7 decision at Fontbonne University (1-14). Dallas remains winless on the final seven-game road trip that ends Sunday. The Griffins picked up their first victory of the campaign.

The Navy and White held the deficit within one point in the first quarter. A seven-goal second stanza pushed a 4-3 edge for the home squad to a manageable distance at halftime. UD tied a quarter-most three goals in the first 15 minutes of the second frame beyond the break, but Fontbonne tallied the final 14 netters in the affair.

Getting the Crusaders on the board early was senior Zachary Wellwerts (McHenry, Ill.). The midfielder found the back of the cage for his sixth goal of the season, and completed the power play with a pass from junior Matthew Cyr (St. Louis, Mo.).

Playing in his hometown, the Men's Lacrosse Team leading scorer, with 42; would notch his ninth hat trick and 12th multi-scoring contest for UD. Cyr added a pair of assists with his first netter coming with 6:46 left in the opening quarter to lift the visitors up the second time in the match.

A goal by senior Cody Wooten (Aurora, Colo.) extended the advantage to 3-1, but that was as far as Dallas would hold the favorable gap. A trio of goals in the final 2:30 of the first quarter nipped the margin and placed the Griffins in front for good.

In the second quarter, two consecutive goals by Joey Mirth within less than 30 seconds carried the momentum. Junior Alex Ziolkowski (Ann Arbor, Mich.), the Navy and White's second highest scorer, eclipsed 20 on the campaign, and brought the deficit to a pair again. With 5:45 left until intermission, the home team garnered the final five scoring plays, including a man up result by Michael Picciolo from Mirth.

Four of Fontbonne's scoring sequences occurred on power plays, and there were seven altogether in the affair. Cyr totaled a pair of his goals, while Wooten finished with the other multiple netter outing for Dallas due to scoring with a man-up advantage. Both Crusaders found the back of the cage on their man up chances in the third.

UD was outshot 78-35, with Cyr posting the second highest total 15, with 11 on goal. The midfielder matched Ziolkowski with seven groundballs. The other member in that duo totaled double figures in shot attempts with 10.

Junior Ryan Murphy (Yorba Linda, Calif.) was saddled with the loss, nabbing 24 saves against 50 in 58:54 minutes between the pipes. A penalty by the keeper spelled his 1:06 for sophomore Jacob Tom (Waukesha, Wis.).

Pacing the home squad's offense was Brett Harris with eight goals on nine of 10 shot attempts on target. Mirth was second on the team with five netters and tied Picciolo with 12 shots. Picciolo contributed five assists, while Mirth dished seven passes that led to scoring results. A trio of members on the Griffins' team reflected three goals including: Brian Nguyen, Victor Mehrtens, and Picciolo.

Seth Yance (1-14) picked up his first winning decision in the goalie position this season, grabbing 15 saves through 59:51 minutes.
