Crusaders End Fall Season With Record-Breaking Win at Chicken Express Open

October 24, 2023

PLAINVIEW, Texas - The University of Dallas men's golf team wrapped up the fall portion of their schedule with a team win at the Chicken Express Open hosted by Wayland Baptist University.  After trailing Texas A&M-San Antonio by 11 strokes at the end of day one, the Crusaders put together a historic performance to come from behind and claim the team trophy by one stroke.  The Crusaders shattered three program scoring records in the process, setting new 18, 36, and 54-hole records.

Their 276 in round three beat the previous record by four strokes, their 569 in rounds two and three beat the previous record by four strokes, and their score of 854 for the tournament beat the previous record by four strokes.

Leonard Lebrun of Wayland Baptist held on for his individual title, shooting a 67 in round three to finish with a 54-hole score of 204.

Michael Zhang set a new program 36-hole record yesterday with a score of 138, beating Emilio Montalvo's previous record of 139 set back in 2019.  Zhang followed that up with a 72 in round three to finish tied for second, while also tying Montalvo's low 54-hole record of 210.

AJ Prudence set a new personal low-round with a 72 in round one yesterday, but that personal best didn't last long as he went on to fire a 70 in round three to record a 54-hole score of 216 to finish tied for sixth.  Trey Schneider climbed eight spots on the leaderboard with a phenomenal 68 in round three to finish tied for sixth with Prudence.

After struggling on day one, Iain Griggs came out of nowhere to post the lowest round of the tournament with a 66 in round three, just one stroke from tying the program low-round of 65 set by Robby Evans in 2017.  Griggs finished in 15th with a score of 221.

Gus Holleman shot asn 80 in round three to post a score of 231 in 17th, and Rex Soullire was forced to withdraw midway through his round due to injury.

This was the final event of the fall portion of the season for Dallas.  The Crusaders played in four events, placing seventh in the Tempest Intercollegiate, tied for fourth at the Rhodes College Fall Classic, and fourth at the UHV Fall Classic prior to this week's tournament.
