Hendrix finishes Season Sweep over Crusaders on Sunday
IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas men's basketball team was topped 82-66 to Hendrix College at the Maher Center on Sunday afternoon. The Warriors (4-3) snapped a five-game losing streak in Irving and defeated the Crusaders twice in a season series for the first time since 2010-11.
Dallas (1-5) made a season-high 10 three-pointers with half in the first stanza that included the team shooting 50 percent (11-22) from the field. Dallas cooled off in the second half and were victims of a season-most 22 turnovers that led to a 25-8 difference in points off the miscues.
The Crusaders came out shooting lights out with their first seven shot attempts made. After a three-pointer by Hendrix's Sean Coman counted for the first points, Michael Wambsganss (Denver, Colo.) put Dallas on the board with a jump shot. Dustin Mathis (Fort Worth, Texas) answered a Hendrix miss with a trey to give the home squad the first lead of the day. Jumpers by the same pair mentioned above and then a three by Joshua Nunn (St. Louis, Mo.) made it 12-12 with four and a half minutes off the clock.
The Crusaders used an 8-0 run with Nunn and Mathis making trifectas and Cameran Hyde (Missouri City, Texas) adding a jumper at 14:14 to open a 17-12 lead.
Neither team etched any points for over three minutes until Hyde nailed a triple to open the Crusaders largest lead of the contest at eight (20-12).
Hendrix responded by tying the scoreboard with eight straight points. Free throws by Jake Riding were the first points on the Warriors side in four minutes. The first field goal by the Warriors was at 9:42 by Alex Conrad. Trace Crawford hit the game-tying three-pointer with nine left before intermission.
A three by Brooks Boutwell (Lake Oswego, Ore.) pushed Dallas back on top a minute later. Sides would trade points over the next several minutes. Two free throws by Nunn put UD up 29-27 with 5:25 remaining, but the home side only had three more points from that juncture heading to halftime.
Hendrix forced the fifth and final tie at 2:54 on a layup by Seth Stanley to make it 29-29. A trey by Kam Brasfield put the visitors up the remainder of the way.
Wambsganss gave the Crusaders their first field goal and points in over three minutes and cut the deficit to one.
The Warriors ended the half on a 10-3 run. This included a buzzer beater from Coman to send the team ahead 37-32. They benefited from a 14-2 advantage on points off turnovers.
Dallas used a couple three-pointers from Logan Fruhwirth (Waynesville, Ohio) and Mathis to cut the margin to four within the first two minutes of the second stanza.
Hendrix ballooned the lead to 10 (51-41) with 13:38 left.
A trey by Hyde cut the difference in the score back into single-digits. He finished with 10 points off the bench and had another inside basket at 12:45 to get the deficit to seven.
That was as close as UD would get, as Trey Rouse propelled Hendrix's lead back to 10 with a trifecta. About midway through the half, Uniikye Washington (Arlington, Texas) gave Dallas another potential big play with three points coming the old fashioned way to get the score to 60-51.
Hendrix never let the lead shrink below 10 after that moment as Rouse sank a big three at 9:40 following a UD turnover.
The Warriors outscored Dallas 45-34 in the second half. They increased their field goal percentage in the last half to 62.5 percent. They also made 11 three-pointers overall in the game. For the contest Hendrix was shooting 47.5 percent compared to 43.1 percent for the Crusaders. Hendrix also outscored its opponent in the paint, 36-18.
The Crusaders held the rebounding advantage, 35-31. Both teams had 10 offensive boards, and Dallas totaled a 9-5 edge in second chance points.
Nunn finished with a team-high 17 points. He went 9-for-11 at the free throw line and added four assists. Mathis chipped in 14 thanks to a 3-for-6 showing behind the arc. Hyde rounded out the trio of double-digit scorers and tied Rashid Coombs (Houston, Texas) off the bench with seven rebounds for team-bests.
Hendrix was guided by Brasfield's 20 points and 7-for-10 field goal shooting. Coman (12), Rouse (11), and Conrad (11) completed the team's quartet of top scorers that eclipsed double figures. Brasfield, Michael Calamese, Coman, and Rouse dished multiple assists at five, four, three, and two, respectively. The Warriors had 20 dimes.
