Colvin's late Surge falls short as Colorado College tops Men's Basketball 65-60
IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas men's basketball team closed the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) part of its season with a 65-60 setback at the Maher Center on Saturday. Darrius Colvin (Waco, Texas) scored the Crusaders' (8-16, 2-12 SCAC) final 13 points on six field goals, but Colorado College (10-14, 10-4 SCAC) held on to earn a tie for second in the conference standings. Schreiner University defeated Trinity University later that evening to win the regular season title.

- Colvin matched a career-high 25 points for the 3rd time this season. His 11-for-18 field goals marked a personal most and was the first time to break double-digits in that category.
- Lorenzo Gonzalez (San Antonio, Texas) and Rory MacCallum (Golden, Colo.) each added 10 points.
- Gonzalez earned all his in the first stanza. He dished five assists and grabbed a season-high eight rebounds.
- MacCallum led the team on the glass with nine. He also had two blocks and assists. Colvin rounded out the top three rebounders with six. Emmanuel Calton (Keller, Texas) dished four assists.
- Colorado College was led by Eric Houska with a game-high 26 points. He was 5-of-8 shooting from three and tied a team-most in assists with three.
- Ryan Young had a double-double in points and rebounds with 11 and 11. Chris Martin added a double figure performance with 11 points. Gabe Chavez matched a game-high 11 rebounds.

- For the second straight game, Dallas was one block shy of a single-game record with eight.
- Dallas finished with a slight edge from the field (35.4% to 33.3%). The Tigers etched twice as many field goals from downtown at 47.1 percent (8-17) compared to UD's 22.2 percent (4-18).
- Neither team shot above 60 percent at the charity stripe, with CC going 15-for-29 (51.7%) to the Crusaders' 55.6-clip (10-18).
- Dallas did capture a 17-0 difference in Fastbreak Points and 35-1 advantage on bench points. Colvin did count for 25 of them after not starting.
- The Tigers edged on the boards 51-41. This included a 19-12 difference on the offensive glass, and helped a five-point difference in 2nd Chance Points (14-9).
- Both squads took care of the ball combining for 17 turnovers. Colorado College was forced into 10.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both offenses started out strong as the Tigers took the first points on an alley-hoop tip-in by John Hatch. Gonzalez scored his first two field goals in a row for the Crusaders from long distance and propelled the team to a 6-5 advantage a minute into action. Calton and Michael Sarrat followed with some break away points to increase the early edge 10-5.
After a couple points by Colorado College narrowed the gap to one (10-9), Sarrat and MacCallum responded with back-to-back field goals in between a turnover by the other side. CC's Young nailed a trey to make it 14-12 a little over five minutes gone by though. That sparked a 9-0 run for the guests and opened an 18-14 difference at 10:52.
Tom Kaiser (Nashville, Tenn.), who played his 100th career game, hit two from the line and cut the deficit in half two minutes later. After an exchange of points, MacCallum gathered an offensive rebound and put it back to knot the contest back at 20 apiece. With about six and a half minutes left until intermission from that juncture, both teams traded points and eventually would end in a 28-28 deadlock. Colorado College knotted things with six seconds as Chavez made the second-of-two free throws.
The Tigers posted the first six points to break the tie as Cooxooeii Black knocked down the first two jumpers. Houska capped the mini-spurt with the first of his 14 in the second frame. Dallas finally broke through the scoring column 2:40 into the half with Calton finishing a fastbreak layup that was started by MacCallum's rebound and outlet pass. That helped UD score nine of the next 10 points in the contest, as Colvin's triple lifted the home side back up 37-35.
At 13:44, MacCallum extended the narrow lead to four, but Houska responded with a trey of his own. His second in a row after a Dallas turnover flipped the score back in favor of Colorado College 41-39. As a whole, this contest featured 13 lead changes and 10 ties. A couple minutes later, Colvin and MacCallum each split two free throws to respectively knot and take the lead a final time at 43-42.
From 9:26 onward, a trifecta by Young nipped the last edge for the Crusaders. There would be one more tie at 45-all, but a pair of free throws by Young sparked a 12-1 run that proved enough to pull Colorado College in front for good.
Down as many as 11, the Crusaders fought back as Colvin took over the offense with a jumper and 3:10 remaining. After another jumper, he gained his own missed three with an offensive rebound on the left side and then charged in to take his own layup and draw a foul. After missing the three-point play, Colvin added another far jumper to reduce the score to 61-55. The Tigers only added a point at the line on the next two possessions, and UD's hottest shooter stormed ahead for a big dunk with 19 seconds to make it a five-point game (62-57). His trey with nine seconds left Dallas down one possession suddenly, but the Tigers' leading scorer, Houska, iced the game with two free throws.
