Double OT for Men's Basketball results in Victory Tuesday over Patriots
IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas men's basketball achieved its first double overtime win on Tuesday night since January 5, 2013 at Southwestern University (73-71). The only other contest to go into a second extra period since that tip was at the end of last month at Trinity (92-91). The Crusaders 94-91 victory over Arlington Baptist College improves the team to 2-1 in overtime games this year and six of last seven since 2014-15 campaign. This was the first contest for Dallas (8-15) to play at the Maher Center since knocking Centenary College off by three (87-84) on February 6, 2015.
Tom Kaiser (Nashvielle, Tenn.) posted 10-of-21 points in overtime, and Matthew Richelsen (Medina, Minn.) had a key basket on his career night to force another extra five minutes on Valentine's Day. The win snaps a three-game losing streak for the Crusaders and also improves them to 8-3 all-time against Arlington Baptist. The past four games in Irving have been wins dating back to 2010-11.
NOTABLE STATISTICS

- Kaiser surpassed 20 points for the first time since his school record setting game against Rhodes College with 45. It was a team-high and the forward added four blocks to match a personal best with his Carroll University performance on December 29.
- Richelsen finished with a career-high 17 points and topped his previous high of 11 which came against Rhodes College. Making his 1st career start, the forward scored 15 in the 1st half and also garnered a personal high nine rebounds.
- Michael Sarrat (Colleyville, Texas) and Emmanuel Calton (Keller, Texas) rounded out the quartet of double-digit scorers with 16 and 11, respectively. Sarrat scored 10 in the 2nd half and Calton notched a season-best.
- Rory MacCallum (Golden, Colo.) added eight points and matched Richelsen for a team-high on the glass. Lorenzo Gonzalez (San Antonio, Texas) posted nine points and assists (2nd highest since 14 this year versus Rhodes).
- The Patriots placed a pair of players with double-doubles in points and boards. Don Paul Mitchell tallied 18 and 10 along with three-of-four blocks for the team. Kel Wallace etched 15 and 13 (game-high).
- Markel Semien scored a team-high 20 points while Cedric Carson and Kennedy Jones finished the quintet of double-digit scorers with 13 and 12, respectively.

- Dallas posted eight blocked shots which was a season-most. It's also one shy of the program record that was accomplished on Jan. 28, 1988, against Austin College.
- The Crusaders posted the most assists since the track meet with Rhodes (39) to start 2017 off by dishing 29. That was 10 more than Arlington Baptist.
- Dallas forced 20 turnovers compared to making 15. The 13 steals for UD also marked the 8th time this year to reach double-digits in that column.
- The home team boasted a significant edge on points in the paint, 72-56. UD also had advantages on Points off turnovers, 25-27, and fastbreak points, 24-16.
- Arlington Baptist edged on the boards 49-44 and scored 13-8 on 2nd chance opportunities.
HOW IT HAPPENED
This contest featured 19 ties and 18 lead changes. The Crusaders raced out to their greatest lead of the eventual 50 minutes within barely over two minutes of play past. Scoring eight-of-10 out of the gate, Gonzalez and Kaiser had quick easy layups to make it 4-0. A basket by Carson etched the first points for the guests at 18:23, but UD had two more layups respectively by Richelsen and Calton to increase the score at 8-2. Arlington Baptist responded immediately with a 9-2 run and claimed its first lead of the night on a trey by Semien.
Both sides moved the ball relatively fast with 24 combined fastbreak points in that stanza. However, neither side was whistled for an infraction until nearly halfway through the frame. UD's MacCallum got called with a foul at 10:39.
Neither team did much to pull away throughout. At 6:41, Richelsen came up with a steal and drove all the way to make it a 29-25 game. The Patriots evened the score for just the 5th tie at the time on back-to-back Carson field goals. Richelsen surpassed his career-high with an offensive rebound and put-back that lifted UD up a final time in the first.
Carson, who scored 11-of-13 within this 20-minute half, drained a trifecta to put the visitors up again. Layups by Semien and Mitchell extended the lead to ABC's largest of the game at 36-31 with 3:28 before intermission.
Those final three and a half minutes were cold for the Patriots, as Dallas scored the final five points with Richelsen's lone made three and a Kaiser field goal in the final minute.
The next half started with four points from the Crusaders with an inside look by Sarrat and fastbreak by Calton after picking up a steal. The teams exchanged leads several times over the course of the half, with 11 by the final horn. There were also six occasions the score was tied. Dallas made a small push down one with Isaiah Hayes (Arlington, Texas) gaining a steal that later led to Sarrat scoring on the next possession to make it 63-62 at 7:32. Sarrat and MacCallum added layups to complete a string of six unanswered and make it 67-62.
From there, the Crusaders worked to hold on narrowly, but Jashun Petite forced a steal and was fouled with 1:07 in regulation. He made one-of-two free throws to tie it at 73 and conclude the scoring for the half.
Both squads scored eight points in the in the first overtime with neither team leading by more than a pair. Darrius Colvin (Waco, Texas) blocked a fastbreak layup chance by the Patriots to keep the scored deadlocked at 77. Semien would give the team a two-point lead after Colvin missed the other way by making two at the charity stripe. Gonzalez countered at 2:21 with a jumper at the free throw line to knot it a 15th time. Semien a little over a minute later pushed the Patriots back on top with two more free throws, but UD's Richelsen found the bottom of the net for his only other points besides the first half with 32 seconds to go. Gonzalez garnered the rebound and earned the assist on the game-tying basket. The Patriots held for a final shot but came up empty from deep down the left side on a jumper.
In the second overtime, Arlington Baptist scored back-to-back after a UD miss to make it a four-point edge. The Crusaders held on and after a Sarrat jumper down low with 2:32 cut it 89-87, the senior guard leaped in front of the passing lane and took a fastbreak layup after the crucial steal. Next possession resulted in a forced jump ball by Kaiser which gave the ball back to home. Kasier was able to make it a four-point game with a pass coming inside from the left by Richelsen. Gonzalez continued his 39 consecutive free throw streak by making three-of-four tonight. His final one of that stretched secured the 94-91 win, as Quinton Moore missed a last effort three.
