Colvin reaches Career-High 25 Points; Not enough as Crusaders fall to Schreiner
IRVING, Texas – Darrius Colvin (Waco, Texas) notched a career-high 25 points and nine made field goals, but was not enough as the University of Dallas men's basketball team was topped by Schreiner University on Friday night at the Maher Center. Dallas (5-10, 0-6 SCAC) held a narrow 39-37 halftime lead, but the Mountaineers (7-9, 4-1 SCAC) used a 10-point margin at the free throw line to secure a road win at the noisy venue.

- Colvin achieved a personal best with his third game in two-seasons to break 20. This included his previous season-high at home against Rhodes College on January 2. Colvin also went 9-for-17 from the floor and topped his earlier most (8) from three contests in the campaign.
- Tonight's leading scorer on both sides also added to his team lead in the rebounding department with seven.
- Michael Sarrat (Colleyville, Texas) was the other Crusader above double figures with 12 points. He dished a season-high four assists and tied his second highest total of rebounds this season with five.
- A trio of UD players each had a pair of three-pointers to combine for the overall team amount. Colvin, Sarrat, and Victor Garate (Austin, Texas) represented this unit.
- Schreiner was led by Keenan Gumbs and Blake Kelley with 17 points apiece. Wes Miller contributed 15 and had a 10-for-12 night at the charity stripe. Phillip Kee rounded out the trio of players in double-digits with 13.
- Kelley nearly had a double-double with nine boards. Kee collected three-of-five blocks for the Mountaineers.

- Both squads shot about even at 42 percent. The two also matched each other with six made treys. The difference came in free throws with the guests going 79.2 percent (19-24) compared to UD's 9-of-13 (69.2%) shooting.
- The Crusaders reached 30 made field goals for the 6th time this season and first in an SCAC game.
- Dallas did force the Mountaineers into 15 turnovers compared to 10 of its own. UD swiped nine steals compared to Schreiner.
- The game featured 11 lead changes and nine ties.
- Schreiner edged the Crusaders on the boards 42-34 and in assists 19-17.
- The Maroon and White found 47 bench points compared to 20 from Dallas. Kelley and Miller combined for 32.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Crusaders' leading scorer of the night, Colvin, got the scoring started quickly with a trifecta to complete the home team's first possession and then added an inside jumper to start a 5-0 advantage with a minute into the game. After SU's Gumbs responded with a basket to get his team on the board, Sarrat found the bottom of the net from downtown and rebounded an offensive tip-in to stretch the lead at 10-2 with two and a half minutes in. Another jumper by Sarrat at 15:04 extended UD's largest advantage of the contest to nine (16-7).
The Mountaineers received an and-one play by Preston Bigley a few plays later and then Kelley got the deficit within four points (16-12) at 14:08. Rory MacCallum (Golden, Colo.) responded with a layup from Garate on an inside pass that gave UD another field goal, but Schreiner gained its first lead of the game 19-18 after seven unanswered points. Andrew Logan drained the go-ahead three with barely under 12 minutes in the half left.
Over the next couple minutes the teams switched leads four times and tied once. Gumbs put Schreiner up by its largest margin at four points (26-22) with 8:26. Sarrat clawed Dallas back within one on his other trey of the game. MacCallum followed a Schreiner turnover out of bounds with a layup to put Dallas back ahead briefly. Another lead change occurred at 7:09 when Kelley got the Mountaineers in front 28-27 on another two points in the paint. A pair of free throws by Miller on the next possession for the guests made it a three-point difference. Teams traded points but then Dallas created a four-point swing with Prince Giadolor (Rockwall, Texas) and Logan Fruhwirth (Waynesville, Ohio) tallying respective field goals with around a minute until the break. Schreiner's Miller tied the game at 37 by splitting at the line.
Gonzalez got the rowdy Crusader fans up with a layup in the final possession that lifted the team up by two at intermission.
Kaiser made a quick basket nine seconds into the next stanza and Colvin went two-for-two at the line for UD's first four points and a six-point edge again a minute in. The Mountaineers found Kee inside on the next three layups to erase the gap with only the third tie at the time. UD's Colvin made it look like he was going to be onward to a special night with seven-of-nine points for the Navy and White over the next three minutes. This included a trey that had followed Garate's three-pointer on the previous home team score. Dallas led 53-47 at this juncture.
Schreiner's Gumbs made the next two field goals, but Fruhwirth kept the distance at four again with 13:08 in the game. Gumbs had his seventh straight SU points on a trifecta that narrowed the margin to one, but Garate's second long range field goal sent the difference back to 58-54. It was a time both sides were torching from beyond the arc as Bigley capped six straight points with one of his own at the midway point and the sixth knotted game.
After Miller split at the line with the second free throw made of the two attempts, Emmanuel Calton (Keller, Texas) and Colvin responded on layups with Colvin's being on a fastbreak. Luis Mancillas answered the Dallas three-point lead with a trey for a 62-all game. Colvin evened his career-high at 20 points with about eight minutes in regulation the final time UD led in the contest on the next play.
The final seven minutes resulted in the last two ties and had Schreiner lead the entire time. Miller started the determining lead change on a three-pointer by Miller. That sparked seven-of-nine points for schreiner, but then Giadolor scored four of the next six for UD, with Colvin's career scoring night happening between. Giadolor's two free throws for the latter points tied things at 70 with a little under five to play. Sarrat had and offensive rebound put-back on an exchange of points to mark the ninth and last tie on the scoreboard.
Schreiner got the next five points with Miller's two free throws and Kelley completing an old fashioned three-point play with two minutes left. The Crusaders' big scorer, Colvin, went to the line on consecutive possessions and got them within two (77-75) and 47 seconds left. The Mountaineers secured victory going perfect on the last four free throw opportunities.
