Men's Basketball topped Friday at Covenant College
LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The University of Dallas men's basketball team (1-1) was unable to contain a strong shooting performance by Covenant College (2-0) in the Barnes PE Center on Friday night. Dallas will look to rebound in a neutral site matchup at the same venue against LaGrange College as part of the Covenant College Classic.
The Scots were an impressive 54.4 percent (37-68) shooting from the floor in the game and 59.4 percent (19-32) from beyond three-point land. This helped guide the host school to a 100-67 final.
HOW IT HAPPENED
It took 30 seconds for Covenant to break a scoreless tie and the lead never changed the rest of the way. Connor Sears connected on the first of 10 treys that half and scored the first five points in under a minute to start the first minute out of the jump ball.
Dallas got on the board in the next possession on a jump shot from Prince Giadolor (Rockwall, Texas). Bailey Spragg and Will Portlock joined the success column in three-point field goals with a jumper from UD's Lorenzo Gonzalez between the two makes. Sears got a second chance after missing a triple with Berto Dryden setting him up for a regular field goal to increase the home team's edge to nine (13-4).
The Crusaders mustered a run with Giadolor totaling the next four points – he had 11 in the opening stanza – and Michael Sarrat (Colleyville, Texas) hit a jump shot to cut the margin to 13-10. It was back to raining triples as the next three field goals came from beyond the arc. Dryden drained the first one and Darrius Colvin (Waco, Texas) answered back with his first make of the night. Spragg put down a three to raise the gap back to six. Covenant remained on fire from downtown, sinking another pair as Ben Phelps hit the team's fourth three in a row with 11:22 and increased the difference back to eight (25-17).
The Scots ballooned their advantage to 53-37 and would continue the hot shooting throughout the next 20 minutes to result in UD's first setback this season.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
- Colvin and Giadolor each led Dallas with 12 points. Colvin pulled down a team-leading eight rebounds. Giadolor led the team for the second game this season in assists with three.
- Xavier Cannon (Humble, Texas) and Logan Fruhwirth (Waynesville, Ohio) contributed nine points apiece for personal-highs in their debut season.
- The Crusaders shot 48.1 percent (26-54) from the floor. They slumped at 21.4 percent (3-14) in three-point field goals and 44.4 percent (12-27) in free throws.
- UD displayed a 34-28 edge on points in the paint.
- Covenant garnered a 37-31 different in rebounds, but both teams had eight total off the offensive glass. CC also held a 27-12 difference in assists.
- Dallas was forced into 19 turnovers while making the Scots commit 13. The home side held an 18-11 edge in points off turnovers.
- Bench points favored Covenant 52-30.
- Dryden led all players with 13 points. He was part of a trio of players with five assists for the opposition. Portlock and Spragg also comprised this unit. Z Arima and Sears each tossed in 11 points.
