Men's Basketball nipped Against Schreiner on Friday

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas men's basketball team (9-3, 0-2 SCAC) came up short Friday night at the Maher Athletic Center in a 64-61 setback versus Schreiner University (8-4, 1-0 SCAC). Dallas has dropped two SCAC matchups in a row, while SU claimed its first victory in conference action.

The Crusaders were able to build an early edge, 30-25, through the end of the first stanza, despite both teams shooting the same field goal percentage. At intermission each squad had posted a 41.7-percent shooting clip.

Schreiner began the second half capturing the momentum and would go an 8-2 run, taking its first lead since 13:39 in the opening frame on a three-pointer by Hollis Robinson. The home squad kept the Mountaineers from pressing in front any further and would extend its advantage a couple times until a trifecta from Maverick Harris with 8:43 in regulation.

Harris would complete seven of his 10 points in the final half as that connection would give the Maroon and White a lead that would not be relinquished. During that stretch, SU was also on a 10-0 run and eventually opened its largest edge by 10 with just over five minutes in the contest.

Dallas mustered a comeback even with a six-point margin with under a minute to go. Senior Kym Malone's (Richardson, Texas) two free throws brought the game within four at 62-58, and a Mountaineer turnover gave the home squad possession with nine seconds remaining.

Sophomore Michael Sarrat (Colleyville, Texas) drained a crucial three-pointer to bring the difference to a point, 62-61 with three seconds left on the clock. SU's Harris sank both shots at the charity stripe and the final effort for the Navy and White missed the mark.

A trio of players for UD notched double-digit scoring performances paced by Malone and Sarrat with 12 apiece. Sophomore Lorenzo Gonzalez (San Antonio, Texas) matched a season-high 11 points for the second-straight game off the bench and also dished out five assists.

Schreiner was led by Wes Miller and Keenan Gumbs with 12 points each. Tying Harris with 10 to round out the unit of double-digit scorers was Stevan Guerrero.

The road team won the battle on the boards, edging UD 36-24, and also held a 33-23 comparison from the bench points.
