Dallas Baseball Splits with Schreiner

April 27, 2024

PLANO, Texas - The University of Dallas baseball team split their conference doubleheader against Schreiner University on Saturday.  They hosted the Mountaineers at John Paul II High School in Plano, Texas due to the stormy weather scheduled to hit Irving. The Crusaders ended the day with a 21-14 overall record and a 9-10 record in conference play.

Game 1

Dallas 8, Schreiner 14

WP: Fito Mendez (4-4)

LP: Adrian Montenegro (7-2)

SV: Luke Rogers (3)

Schreiner jumped out to an early lead after a bumpy start by Adrian Montenegro.  A walk, a wild pitch, and two singles to start the game saw Schreiner plate two runs before an out was recorded, though Montenegro set the next three batters down in order to end the inning without any further damage.

Montenegro settled into the game, scattering four baserunners over three innings, one of which reached on an error, and held the Mountaineers scoreless in that span.  But the wheels came off in a disastrous fifth inning that saw Schreiner score six runs on six hits, two errors and a walk to take a commanding 8-0 lead.

The Crusaders scattered some hits here and there, but their bats were largely silenced over the first six innings.  Schreiner added two runs in the top half of the sixth to put Dallas on the brink of being mercy ruled.

Dallas did not go down quietly, however, as the bats finally came alive in the seventh inning.  Three straight singles and a walk got the Crusaders on the board, then a single by Fernando Davila and a double by Caleb Hohman brought home three more runs to make it a 10-4 game before an out was recorded in the inning.

A fielder's choice and two more knocks scored another three runs, as Dallas slashed the deficit to 10-7 by inning's end.

After a scoreless eighth, Schreiner put the game effectively out of reach in the ninth.  Four straight hits to open the inning plated two runs, then a pair of sac flies made it a 14-7 game, requiring UD to muster another seven run inning to stay alive.

Dallas scored a consolation run with two outs in the ninth, but couldn't do any more than that.

The loss paired with Texas Lutheran's win in game two of their series against Southwestern eliminated the Crusaders from postseason contention.

Game 2

Dallas 12, Schreiner 1 (7 Innings)

WP: Dylan Krause (7-2)

LP: Trey Bennett (2-6)

Dallas made sure to get on the board first in game two, taking a 1-0 lead on a two-out single by Walker Alsobrooks.  They made it a 4-0 game on a three-run homer by Luke Gill, then exploded for seven runs in the fourth to take an 11-0 lead.

Fernando Davila and David Saldana each had two-RBI doubles, then Gill capped off the scoring with his second three-run homer of the day.  All of the scoring in the inning happened with no outs.

Dylan Krause dominated on the mound, holding Schreiner scoreless for five innings.  The Mountaineers scored their only run off Krause on a two-out single in the sixth.  Krause left the game having allowed just one run on four hits, with five strikeouts and three walks in six full innings of work.

Jayden Rodriguez threw a scoreless inning of relief in the seventh to secure the win.
