Pirates Pull Away Late to Take Series

March 30, 2024

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The University of Dallas baseball team lost their conference games against Southwestern University on Saturday, falling to 16-7 on the year and 4-4 on conference play.

Dallas 5, Southwestern 8

WP: Andrew Hardin (2-1)

LP: Collin Johnson (2-2)

Southwestern took an early 3-0 lead after a rough first inning by Marcelo Carillo II.  The Crusaders' starter walked three, threw four wild pitches, and allowed two singles to give the Pirates their lead.  He didn't make it out of the first, as Cortez Saenz was called upon to get the final out of the inning.

The Crusaders chipped away at the lead; Ryan Metcalf doubled home Caleb Hohman (pictured) in the third, Fernando Davila brought home a run on a groundout in the fourth, then Andrew Gaspar stole home on a double steal to tie the game at 3-3.

Through three full innings of relief, Saenz held the Pirates scoreless; he allowed just two hits and got out of a bases-loaded jam in the third to hold the Pirates at bay.

Southwestern scraped across a run on a groundout in the fifth to reclaim the lead, but David Laranjo singled home the tying run in the seventh to make it a 4-4 game.

Collin Johnson was called upon to relieve Saenz in the eighth having thrown three innings of relief yesterday.  He struggled through the bottom of the seventh, but escaped unscathed.  He took the mound again in the eighth, having never thrown more than four innings of relief in a two-day span, and gave up four runs on five hits before he was removed to make way for Dominic Gill.

Dallas scored a consolation run in the ninth, but had to settle for the loss.

Caleb Hohman finished the series 7-of-13 at the plate (.539) with four runs scored, a double, a homer, and five RBI.
