Baseball Splits with Southwestern

March 29, 2024

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The University of Dallas baseball team split their conference double header against Southwestern University on Friday, ending the day 16-6 overall and 4-3 in conference play.

Game 1

Dallas 9, Southwestern 6

WP: Collin Johnson (2-1)

LP: Ty Elder (0-2)

Dallas jumped out to an early lead after plating two runs on an error in the first inning, but Southwestern pulled one back in the bottom half of the inning to make it a 2-1 game.

Reed Morales came up clutch with two outs in the third, driving in two runs with a single to give Dallas a 4-1 lead.  Fernando Davila made it 5-1 with a sac fly in the fourth.

Adrian Montenegro silenced the Pirates for four innings, allowing just two hits while holding Southwestern scoreless from the second inning through the fifth.  The Pirates finally cracked the code in the sixth, as James Vaquero hit a two-run homer and Alexander Cannata singled home another to make it a 5-4 game heading into the seventh.

Southwestern scored one run off Dominic Gill on a walk and a knock before Collin Johnson was called upon out of the pen.  He was able to get out of the inning without any further damage dealt to head into the eighth all square at 5-5.

Dallas reclaimed the lead with two runs in the eighth, and Southwestern pulled one run back in the bottom half, scoring just the second earned run off Johnson all season.  The Crusaders added two more runs on two bases-loaded walks in the ninth, and Johnson threw his third scoreless inning to secure the win.

Game 2

Dallas 5, Trinity 6

WP: Braden Anderson (2-0)

LP: Seth Medley (0-1)

Caleb Hohman put Dallas on top early with a solo homer in the first.  He drove in their second run as well with an RBI single in the third, which was followed immediately by an RBI single by Simon Turner to make it 3-0 Dallas.

Dylan Krause (pictured) was cruising on the mound, facing the minimum 12 batters through four innings and carrying a no-hitter through to the seventh.  The Pirates finally got to the sophomore righty as he began to run out of steam in the seventh, scoring their first run on a sac fly after Krause loaded the bases by allowing a single and two walks.

Krause managed to get out of the bases loaded jam with just the one run allowed, exiting the game with seven strikeouts and one run allowed on one hit in seven innings of work.

It was a performance deserving of a win, but unfortunately the Pirates plundered the Crusaders' bullpen for four runs in the eighth to take a 5-3 lead.

Hohman came through yet again for Dallas in the ninth, driving in two runs on a single to tie the game up 5-5.  The tie didn't last long, however, as Southwestern walked off the game with a two-out, bases-loaded single by Jacob Tanner.

Hohman finished the game 3-for-5 with four RBI and a run scored.

The series will conclude tomorrow with a single game at 12:00 pm.
