Baseball Drops Series Finale to TLU

March 24, 2024

SEGUIN, Texas - The University of Dallas baseball team lost their series finale against Texas Lutheran on Sunday, falling to 15-5 on the year and 3-2 in conference play.

Dallas 5, Texas Lutheran 9

WP: Diego Vinton (2-4)

LP: Marcelo Carrillo II (2-1)

SV: Johnny Garza Jr. (1)

The Bulldogs went ahead in the bottom of the first thanks to some sloppy play by the Crusaders.  An ill-advised throw to third by the catcher to get a runner caught in a rundown, followed by a wild throw back home by the third baseman to nab said runner resulted in two runs scoring on the play.  TLU took a 2-0 lead before Marcelo Carillo II got the next two runners out to end the threat.

Dallas scraped across a run in the second on a sac bunt by Ryan Metcalf, but Aric Vasquez hit a two-out RBI double in the bottom half of the inning to get the run back and make it 3-1 TLU.

The Crusaders jumped ahead with a two-out rally in the third.  Tyler Darnell and Jake Amoroso hit back-to-back singles, then Caleb Hohman got plunked to load the bases.  Simon Turner stepped up and smoked a bases clearing double to left-center to make it a 4-3 game for Dallas.

The two sides traded blows over the next inning: TLU with a sac bunt in the bottom of the third, and Dallas with a solo homer by Luke Gill, the first of his career, to make it 5-4.

TLU tied the game up fair and square with an infield single in the fifth, but a pair of errors by Dallas gave them two more runs in the inning to make it a 6-5 game for the Bulldogs.  That would be all the scoring the Bulldogs needed, as the Crusaders were blanked the rest of the way.

It wasn't for lack of trying or failing to get in scoring position, as the Crusaders stranded eight runners over the last four innings, including leaving the bases loaded in the top of the sixth.

Amoroso ended the series going 4-of-10 (.400) at the plate with two runs scored, a homer, and four RBI.  Caleb Hohman had just official at-bats, notching three hits, because he led the team with seven walks across three games.

Simon Turner led the team with five RBI in the series.
