Crusaders Lose Back and Forth Battle with Hardin-Simmons

March 12, 2024

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas baseball team lost their non-conference matchup against Hardin-Simmons University on Tuesday, falling to 12-3 on the year.

Dallas 7, Hardin-Simmons 8

WP: Grant Mitzelfelt (1-2)

LP: Ryan Chaffin (0-1)

SV: Jaydon Stephens (2)

The two sides traded blows all game in an evenly matched contest.  The Cowboys took a 1-0 lead on a walk, a knock, and a sac fly in the first, only for Paxton Huff (pictured) to give Dallas the 2-1 lead with a two-run homer, the first of his career, in the bottom of the inning.

Dallas went up 4-1 in the third with a pair of two-out RBI singles by Caleb Hohman and Simon Turner.  Hardin-Simmons cut the lead to one with a two-RBI single in the fifth, but Turner hit a two-run homer in the bottom half of the inning to put the Crusaders up 6-3; it was Turner's third homer in as many games.

The ball continued to fly out of the park, as HSU's Jacob Hollingsworth hit a two-run homer to make it 6-5 in the seventh, with an RBI single tying the game up before the inning was out.

Pearce Coleman came up with a clutch two-out single in the eighth to give the Crusaders the lead going into the ninth.  But the Cowboys had other ideas, as Jake Forrest hit the fourth homer of the day, a two-run shot, to put HSU on top 8-7.  The Crusaders were set down in order in the bottom of the ninth to give HSU the win.
