Baseball Splits DH, Hohman and Castillo Mash in Game One

KERRVILLE, Texas - The University of Dallas baseball team split their conference doubleheader against Schreiner University on Saturday.  They improve to 15-23 overall on the year and 6-14 in conference play.

GAME 1 - Dallas 8, Schreiner 7

WP: Dylan Krause

LP: Fito Mendez

SV: Caleb Hohman (2)

After a quiet start, Caleb Hohman gave Dallas the lead with a two-run homer in the top of the third, his seventh of the year.  Two innings later he doubled the lead with yet another two-run homer to make it 4-0 Dallas and to bring his yearly total to eight, good enough for second in the conference.

Meanwhile, Dylan Krause was in the midst of another stellar outing, throwing six innings of shutout ball while allowing just two base hits and striking out five.  It took Schreiner until the seventh to finally begin to crack his code, but not before he struck out the first two batters of the inning.  He was taken out of the game after loading the bases on a walk and two singles, with Graeme Williams coming in to relieve.

But the Mountaineers came up with the big hit they needed to get themselves back in the game, clearing the bases with a grand slam to make it a 5-4 ball game.

Dallas responded with a big hit of their own in the top of the eighth to extend their lead.  The Crusaders also cleared the bases with two outs, thanks a three-run homer by Brett Castillo, his second of the year.

Schreiner made a game of it, plating two runs in the eighth and pulling themselves within one run in the ninth, but Hohman came in and shut down the threat to record his second save of the season.

Hohman and Castillo combined to do most of the damage at the plate for Dallas.  Hohman was 2-for-5 at the plate with two homers and four RBI, and Castillo was 2-for-5 with one homer and three RBI.

Game 2 - Dallas 6, Schreiner 7 (10 Innings)

WP: Garrett Landin (1-0)

LP: Marcello Carilloo II (3-2)

Schreiner came out swinging in game two, jumping out to a very early 1-0 lead on a lead-off homer in the first, adding another run to make it 2-0 by the end of the inning.  Four straight hits in the second plated two more runs for the Mountaineers as they took a 4-0 lead.

Dallas hit back in the third, Payton Garbett quickly got the Crusaders on the board with a homer to lead off the inning, his first of the season.  Fernando Davila made it two with an RBI double, and Austin Birkhoff made it three runs in the inning with a sac fly to bring home Brett Castillo.

The Mountaineers pulled one back in the fourth, but Dallas answered back in the sixth with a solo homer by Noah Sharar, his first of the season, to make it a 5-4 game for Schreiner.

Dallas pulled ahead in the seventh, taking advantage of free bases to plate two runs with the bases loaded to take a 6-5 lead.  They will surely look back on the inning with some regret, however, as they only managed one hit in the inning and left the bases loaded.

Schreiner took advantage of the opportunity, tying the game up with one run in the ninth and walking the game off in the 10th.

The series and the Crusaders' seasonwill conclude tomorrow with a single game scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. first pitch.
