Late Push Not Enough for Baseball vs St. Thomas

HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Dallas baseball team lost theri conference matchup against the University of St. Thomas on Saturday.  They fall to 14-19 overall on the year and 5-10 in conference play.

WP: Kadin Munson (3-1)

LP: Adrian Montenegro (0-6)

After a scoreless top of the first for Dallas, the Celts led off the bottom half of the frame with a walk, a knock, and a sac fly to take a 1-0 lead.  The Crusaders tied it up in the second on a two-out, bases loaded dropped third strike, but left the bases loaded to end the inning.

Caleb Hohman put UD on top with their first hit of the day, leading of the third inning with a solo homerun.  Dallas plated another run, an unearned run with two outs, to take a 3-1 lead.

The Celts made it 3-2 with a solo shot in the fourth, then scored three runs on four hits in the fifth to take a 5-3 lead.  They came up clutch with two outs in the sixth and seventh innings with a pair of RBI singles to extend their lead to 7-3.  

A lead off pinch hit double by Jake Amoroso in the eighth was immediately followed by a Tyler Darnell single, putting runners on first and third for Dallas with no outs.  Teagan Mansfield got the run across with a sac fly to make it 7-4 going into the bottom of the eighth.

Unfortunately, the Celts once again came up big with two outs, this time driving in two runs with a triple.  They scored three runs in total in the inning to go up  10-4 heading into the ninth.  

Dallas managed to spark a rally with two outs in the ninth, plating their first run of the inning on a wild pitch, then adding another with a solo homer by Brett Castillo.  Amoroso was then hit by a pitch, and Tyler Darnell singled to keep the line moving.  But it was too little, too late, as the Celts squashed the rally and completed the series sweep.

Up Next

The play their final home series of the year next weekend.  They host Texas Lutheran for three games, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 22.  Game one is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. first pitch.
