Tigers Take Two from Dallas to Clinch Series

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas baseball team lost both games of their conference doubleheader against Trinty University on Friday.  They fall to 14-14 on the year and 5-6 in conference play.

GAME 1 - Dallas 4, Trinity 8

WP: Jackson Briese (1-1)

LP: Dylan Krause (5-1)

SV: Jack Martinez (2)

The series opener was a tense affair that could have easily gone either way.  The Crusaders put together a couple of strong at-bats in the first inning; Brett Castillo singled home Jake Amoroso on a full count after fouling off five pitches to give Dallas the 1-0 lead in the first inning.

Trinity answered back with a solo homer in the second and were poised to score more with runners on first and third, but Dylan Krause picked off Jack Peterson at first base to end the inning and get out of the two-out jam.

The Tigers put five hits and a sac fly together to score three runs in the third, and Dallas pulled one back in the bottom half on an RBI single by Caleb Hohman to make it 4-2 for Trinity.

The two sides mathced each other blow for blow in the fourth and fifth innings.  Payton Garbett singled home Fernando Davila, who reached second after Joseph Chavana's pick-off attempt skipped down the right field line, to make it 4-3.  Trinity came back with a two-out RBI double in the fifth to go up 5-3, then a booted ball and a wild throw by Trinity's shortstop brought home Tyler Darnell to make it a 5-4 ball game.

After a scoreless sixth and seventh, Trinity came up with a two-RBI single with two outs to extend their lead to three, then added one more insurance run with a solo homerun in the ninth.  The Crusaders managed to get two runners on, but stranded them both in the ninth as Trinity saw out the win.

GAME 2 - Dallas 2, Trinity 14 (8 Innings)

WP: Cade McGahan (2-1)

LP: Dominic Gill (4-4)

The Tigers struck first in game two.  After leading off the second inning with two singles, Michael Montrezza plated the first run of the game with a sac fly.  Dominic Gill nearly got himself out of a two-out jam in the third, but Ezra Gore homered to make it 4-0 Trinity.

Another sac fly in the fourth made it 5-0, then Dallas got on the board in the bottom half of the inning with a two-out RBI single by Peyton Garbett.  The Tigers added a run in the fifth, and Garbett struck once again with an RBI double down the left field line to make it a 6-2 game.

Unfoortunately, that would be all the scoring the Crusaders could muster in game two.  The Tigers added two runs in the seventh, then a disastrous eighth in which Dallas gave up 10 free bases between walks, hit batters, and errors saw the Tigers jump out to a 14-2 lead.

The Crusaders had no answer in the bottom of the eigth, giving Trinity the mercy win to clinch the series.

The series finale will be played tomorrow (April 8) at 12:00 p.m.
