Crusaders Slug Their Way Past Hardin-Simmons

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas baseball team won their nonconference game against Hardin-Simmons 13-8 on Tuesday.  They improve to 9-7 on the year.

DALLAS 13, Hardin-Simmons 8

WP: Graeme Williams (1-3)

LP: Brandon Girod (0-1)

The Crusaders maintained a steady output of runs in the early innings of the game.  They took advantage of some free passes, something they would do all game, to take a 2-0 lead in the first on an RBI-single by Brett Castillo and a squeeze bunt by Austin Birkhoff.

Dallas added three more runs on four hits in the second inning to make it 5-0, then doubled their lead with five runs on three hits in the third inning.  Caleb Hohman capped off the inning with a three-RBI homer, his second of the year.

After a scoreless fourth, the Cowboys put up a crooked number in a hurry, piling on eight runs in the fifth to make it a 10-8 ballgame.  The inning ended with the tying run at the plate, as the Crusaders were finally able to stop the bleeding.

The Crusaders bounced back and added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh.  Hohman brought one in on an RBI single in the sixth, then Andrew Gaspar and Teagan Mansfield each plated a run in the seventh.  That would be all the scoring Dallas needed, as the bullpen shut down the Cowboys the rest of the way to hold on for the win.

Dallas threw six pitchers in what was a planned bullpen outing.  Hohman, Cortez Saenz, Marcelo Carrillo II, and Seth Medley combined for six innings of shutout ball, allowing five hits between the four of them.

Hohman went 3-for6 on the day, driving home five runs to take over as the team's RBI leader with 15 on the season thus far.  Jake Amoroso continues to swing a hot stick at the leadoff spot, going 3-for-5 in this game to make it 14 hits in his last six games.
