UD Baseball Swept in Saturday's Home SCAC Doubleheader

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas Crusaders dropped the first two games of a three-game series against Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) opponent Southwestern University. In game one, reigning SCAC Pitcher of the Week, Travis Harvey, pitched a one hit shutout against Dallas, which included a stretch of retiring 14 straight batters. In game two, Dallas had some initial offensive success quickly taking a 2-0 in the first inning before the Pirates fired back and outscored UD 10-1 over the next eight innings.

Southwestern got off to a fast start as the Pirates put the first seven men on base.  Leadoff batter Ted Lobkowicz doubled, Maxwell Mims singled, Lance Kruse was hit by a pitch and Jacob Tanner doubled to left to drive in Lobkowicz and Mims for the first runs of the game.  Preston Witt was then hit by a pitch followed by two consecutive RBI walks to Daniel Montgomery Jr. and Alex Cannata.  Landon Durdin then struck out for the first out of the inning.  Trent Raschke then reached first safely on a fielder's choice driving in Witt and sending Montgomery to third.  On the same play Montgomery scored on a throwing error by Michael Jaquez (Irving, Texas) for the sixth and final run of the inning.  Lobkowicz then grounded out to second.

The Pirates picked up another run in each of the next two innings.  In the second, Mims scored on a fielding error by Jaquez, and in the third inning Mims drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to shallow center field.  The catch was made by shortstop Jaquez, and Dallas recorded the final out of the inning at third base on the same play as Raschke tried to advance on the throw home.  The relay went from Jaquez to catcher Casey White (Amorita, Okla.) to third baseman Joe Vondrachek (North St. Paul, Minn.).

The final two runs of the game came in the sixth inning.  After Southwestern put runners on first and third with one out, relief pitcher Colby Fuller (League City, Texas) balked in Lobkowicz.  Two batters later, Witt singled through the right side to score Kruse to make the score 10-0.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, White singled through the left side to spoil Harvey's no-hitter.  Tyler Darnell (Southlake, Texas) then walked to put runners on first and second, but that's as far as UD got.  Harvey then put away the next six batters to close out the game early in seven innings.

Over the last two starts, Harvey faced 22 straight batters without allowing a hit before White broke that streak.  Also, Harvey is currently on a streak of 15 ? innings pitched without allowing an earned run.

Dallas got on the board first as leadoff hitters Vondrachek and Jaquez reached base on a single and a walk.  After a flyout by Nathan Patton (McKinney, Texas) Vondrachek and Jaquez successfully committed a double steal.  Ross Lowe (Lewisville, Texas) then struckout, followed by a two RBI single by Zach Taylor (Humble, Texas).  Michael Anderson (Denver, Colo.) then doubled to left before Grady Birmingham (Newport Beach, Calif.) grounded out to end the inning.

In the top of the second, Montgomery was hit by a pitch, Jake Harris singled and Durdin walked to load the bases.  Raschke then grounded into a fielder's choice to score a run, and Harris scored on an error by Taylor.  Lobkowicz then walked, Mims singled in a run, Kruse scored a run on a sacrifice fly and on the next play Mims scored on a throwing error by Vondrachek for the fifth run of the inning.

In the fifth inning, the Pirates scored four more runs on a pair of RBI doubles.  With two on and nobody out, Witt doubled to left field to score Kruse, and with the bases loaded and two outs Raschke cleared the bases on a double to center.

Southwestern scored their 10th and final run of the game in the top of the sixth as Montgomery walked with the bases loaded to score Kruse.

In game two, every starting batter for the Pirates scored at least one run.

With his two stolen bases in game two, Vondrachek moved into a three-way tie for the second most total stolen bases amongst all SCAC players with nine.

Dallas will finish the series against Southwestern on Sunday with a game three game time at 12:00 p.m. CST.
