UD Baseball Splits Saturday at Schreiner to Start Conference

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas Crusaders split the first two games of their three game series against Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) opponent Schreiner University. In game one, the critical moment in the game came in a six-run fifth inning by Schreiner driven by a collection of singles and a two RBI double.

In game two, Dallas jumped ahead 8-0 by the third inning before the Mountaineers started fighting back. Schreiner pulled the game to two at 10-8 in the 6th, but that's as close as it got. Schreiner threatened the game tying run in the bottom of the 9th, but UD pitcher Jon Talley (Pineville, La.) struck out Ryan Ragle with the bases loaded to win the game and grab his first collegiate save with Dallas.

Dallas scored the first three runs of the game with runs in the 1st, 4th and 5th innings. In the 1st inning, Nathan Patton (McKinney, Texas) hit a two out double followed by an RBI double by Ross Lowe (Lewisville, Texas). In the 4th, Lowe led off with a single, advanced to second on a groundout by Zach Taylor (Humble, Texas) and scored on a triple by Michael Anderson (Denver, Colo.). In the 5th, Joe Vondrachek (North St. Paul, Minn.) hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Tyler Darnell (Southlake, Texas) to put the Crusaders up 3-0.

Schreiner answered back in the bottom of the inning. Chance Gloins walked to start the inning followed by Seth Joseph getting hit by a pitch. Miguel Quinones and Josh Gilliam hit back-to-back RBI singles to bring the score to 3-2. Reece Hohhertz singled to load the bases and Jeff Williams doubled in two runs. Devin Hooper hit a sacrifice to right field and Isaiah Hernandez singled in Williams for the final run of the inning to make the score 6-3.

Dallas made a run in the 9th inning as Vondrachek singled followed by a triple by Michael Jaquez (Irving, Texas). Patton grounded out to second, Lowe walked and Taylor reached on a fielder's choice as Lowe was thrown out at second and Jaquez scored to make the score 6-5. After a wild pitch advanced pinch runner Max Costello (Anchorage, Alaska) to scoring position, Anderson grounded out to first to end the game.

In game two, UD got ahead quickly 1-0 on an RBI walk by Lowe.

In the second inning, the Crusaders batted around starting off with a single by Grady Birmingham (Newport Beach, Calif.). After Graeme Williams (Frisco, Texas) made an out, Vondrachek singled in Birmingham. Vondrachek stole second and scored on a double by Jaquez. Patton popped out to short for the second out and then Lowe, Taylor and Anderson hit consecutive singles. Andrew Womack (Vienna, Va.) walked in a run followed by two more RBI walks from Anderson and Williams. Vondrachek then grounded into a fielder's choice to end the breakout inning.

In the third, Dallas extended their lead to 8-0 as Lowe hit a sacrifice fly to center, which scored Jaquez.

In the bottom of the inning, Schreiner scored two as Gilliam scored on an error and Hooper tripled in a run.

In the fifth, Jaquez, Patton and Lowe hit three straight singles to put across another run for Dallas.

In the bottom of the fifth, Quinones, Gilliam and Hohhertz led off the inning with three straight singles followed by Williams doubling in two runs. Hohhertz then scored on a wild pitch and Willams scored on a sac fly to center. The Mountaineers brought the score to 9-7 after two straight hit batsmen and an RBI double by Joseph.

In the sixth, the two teams traded one run as Vondrachek drove in Darnell on a sacrifice to center, which was answered by an RBI single by Goins.

Dallas scored four times in the top of the 7th as Lowe walked, Taylor singled and Anderson walked to start the inning. After Zach Saloman (Oklahoma City, Okla.)struck out, Birmingham doubled in two runs to make the score 12-8. Williams then struck out and Vondrachek singled in two more.

In the bottom of the 7th, Keller Driskill walked, Joseph singled and Quinones plated a run with a single. After Joseph and Quinones advanced a base, Gilliam struck out and Hohhertz hit a sacrifice to right field.

Schreiner got their last run of the game in the 8th, as Joseph hit an RBI single to score Goins.

Dallas got one more in the 9th, as Anderson singled, advanced to second on a groundout and then scored on a single by Birmingham.

Schreiner threatened one last time in the 9th as Williams, Hooper and Goins all hit singles with two outs. With the base loaded, Crusaders closer Jon Talley struck out Ragle on three pitches to win the game 15-11.

Dallas will finish the series against Schreiner on Sunday with a game three game time at 1:00 p.m. CST.
