Crusaders Grab Both Games Against Arlington Baptist University on Saturday
IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas baseball team won both of its contests versus Arlington Baptist University on Saturday. The Crusaders won the first game 4-1 after a stellar outing on the mound from Conrad Voss (Corona, Calif.) and timely hitting. Dallas will then took the second game 8-4 in a back-and-forth game. Nathan Patton (McKinney, Texas) went deep in the game and three different Crusaders drove in 2 RBI each. Jamie Wallace (Crockett, Texas) then collected the win on the mound to help Dallas grab two wins to start its home-opening series.

Zachary Taylor (Humble, Texas) got the Crusaders on the board early after he doubled to right field to drive in Michael Jaquez (Irving, Texas). Arlington Baptist had a double, but Voss got out of the jam unscathed. Jaquez then picked up an RBI in the bottom half of the second and his single up the middle helped score another UD run. Arturo Gaytan homered to left field in the third for ABU to cut the Dallas lead to 2-1. Christian Wheatley (Austin, Texas) singled to open the fourth inning with his hit through the left side. Wheatley advanced to second on a balk. Nicolas Hovde (Waco, Texas) reached on a bunt and later stole second. Mavrick Martinez (Friendswood, Texas) walked to load up the bases with nobody out. With one out in the inning, Jaquez drove in Wheatley with his sacrifice fly.
ABU tested Voss in the fifth, but he got out of the jam with a fielder's choice. Wheatley was hit by a pitch in the sixth and Hovde followed that up with his double to left center. Wheatley later scored thanks to a passed ball by the ABU catcher. Dallas had more cooking in the inning with three walks and a couple stolen bases, but UD would hit into an inning ending double play. Tyler Montemayor (Boerne, Texas) shut the door on the Patriots with two quick clean innings to help UD collect the home-opening win.
Wheatley was 2-2 at the plate, with two runs scored. Michael Jaquez (Irving, Texas) drove in 2 RBI in this contest to help lead the offense. Voss got the start in this game and picked up his third win on the season after he pitched five innings, allowing one run and just three hits, while striking out eight batters. Montemayor got his first save on the season with two innings of work out of the pen. Montemayor allowed no hits, no walks, and no runs and struck out two men. Martinez drew three of the team's eight walks. Zachary Taylor (Humble, Texas) and Hovde both had a double in the game. UD had six stolen bases in the first game of the day.
Arlington Baptist only had three hits in the game, but Gaytan hit a homerun to put the Patriots on the board. The Patriots struck out 10 times and only walked twice. Ryan Munoz pitched five innings, gave up six hits, four runs (3 earned), and five walks. Colton Donally came into pitch the final inning and gave up three free bases.

ABU drew first blood in the second game. With two outs, Parker Humphrey came all the way around to score on a wild pitch after he singled to begin the inning. The Patriots got a runner to third in the second, but Graeme Williams (Frisco, Texas) got out of the jam with a groundout to third. UD had two baserunners in its half of the second but nothing came of it. After a quiet third and fourth inning, Dallas started to get into a rhythm in the fifth. ABU got two quick outs, but Dallas put on a rally. Joseph Vondracheck (North St. Paul, Minn.) singled to center field and stole second base. Jaquez followed that up with a single to left field to help score Vondrachek and tie the game up a 1. In the next at bat, Patton hammered a no doubt homerun over the left field fence to give UD its first lead of the contest (3-1). UD had more cooking, but ended up stranding the bases loaded.
Williams got two tough outs in the top of the sixth, after ABU tried to get back into the game. With the bases loaded, a throwing error by UD led to three runs scoring for the Patriots, which put ABU back on top (4-3). Wallace then came in out of the pen to get the final out.
Dallas had some more two-out magic in the seventh. Taylor reached first on a fielding error by the shortstop. Andrew Womack (Vienna. Va.) then walked. Cade Corbett (Corona, Calif) singled to left field to drive in the tying run. Wheatley followed that up with a single to left field to bring around two more UD runs and put Dallas back in the lead 6-4. Taylor drove in two more insurance runs in the eighth with his double down the right field line to give Wallace some breathing room on the mound. ABU got just one hit in the ninth, as UD was able to sweep the day.
Vondracheck, Patton, and Taylor each had two hits. Vondracheck scored two runs and swiped two bases. Patton, Taylor, and Wheatley notched two RBI each. Taylor had a double, while Patton hit his second homerun of the season. Corbett grabbed his first career RBI on the season. Dallas had four more stolen bases this game. Williams started this game and went 5.2 innings, gave up seven hits, four runs (1 earned), and two walks. Jamie Wallace (Crockett, Texas) finished out the final 3.1 innings on the mound, allowing just one hit, no runs, and no walks. Wallace also struck out four men to earn the win.
Cole Row led the Patriots with a 3-4 effort at the plate, while scoring one run. Garrett Price added two hits for ABU. The Patriots used four different pitchers in the second game.
Four batters have now eclipsed ten or more hits on the season for UD.
