Baseball Senior Day Closes the 2019 Home Schedule on Saturday

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas baseball team battled Southwestern University in the series finale and on Senior Day for eight players that suited up one last time in front of the home fans. A home run by Bryon Dowdell II that scored three runs and put the Pirates ahead 5-3 in the fifth inning, would be the difference. Colton Hunter started for Southwestern and worked through trouble most of the day, but would hang onto the complete game victory.

Colby Schmidt hammered the fourth home run of the series in the second inning to lift the Pirates on top, 1-0.

A wild pitch allowed Michael Jaquez (Irving, Texas) to knot the score in the home half of the inning. He and Joseph Griesbauer (Troy, Mo.) had one-out singles. A groundout moved them to scoring position. Dallas couldn't get the lead-run the last 90 feet though.

Schmidt had his second RBI and the road team's second RBI in the third frame.

Dallas gained its first lead of the series with two runs coming in the bottom of that same inning. Mark Peterson (Cincinnati, Ohio) grounded into a double play, but Jordan Stickler (Grand Rapids, Mich.) would cross home for the tying run. An error on the next batter and fellow senior classmate, Jessup Scott (Lewiston, Idaho) would give UD the 3-2 advantage.

Earlier in the third, Stickler beat out an infield hit to shortstop. He would steal to get into scoring position, but that was all Dallas mustered that frame.

The Pirates swung the momentum for good in the fifth, as Daniel Montgomery Jr. walked, Kelly singled to left, and then Dowdell II belted his second long ball of the series and fourth extra-base hit to exchange the lead for good.

Andrew Magness (San Antonio, Texas) got his fifth strikeout in 4.1 innings, but would walk the next three batters to increase his final line to seven and end his afternoon. Jaylen Camarillo (Georgetown, Texas) entered and induced a double play that snuffed the bases-loaded trouble.

Camarillo hurled a career-long 4.2 innings and went four innings for the second time this season. He did not allow a run or hit in his relief outing. The freshman did walk three, struck out two, and got a trio of double plays when needed.

Hunter meanwhile for the Pirates had been walking a tight rope through four innings, but settled down to face just two over the minimum over the next three innings. A two-out double to left center by Nathan Patton (McKinney, Texas) was the only huge concern in that span, but a strikeout kept him there.

In the ninth, Paul Scioli (Lubbock, Texas) singled up the middle, but Dallas' rally fell short leading to the weekend sweep.

UD outhit the Pirates 9-6, with Patton, Scioli, and Stickler going 2-for-4. The first pair in that group knocked doubles.

Six different players for Southwestern had hits, but 10 walks helped the cause, as did half of its base knocks going for extra bases. Hunter would go the distance and scatter nine hits, and allowed two earned runs. He walked just one and fanned eight.

Before the first pitch of this game, eight seniors were honored for their contributions to the UD baseball team. This octet included: Abalos, Hanson, Scioli, Scott, Griesbauer, Luke Boylson (Fairview, Texas), Stickler, and Peterson.
