Crusaders Split Doubleheader vs. Howard Payne University on Tuesday

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas baseball team split its doubleheader with Howard Payne University on Tuesday. The Yellowjackets were led by Noah Payne who drove in five RBI and hit for the cycle in Game One. Dallas grabbed four runs in the first two innings, but were held in check the rest of the contest as HPU notched 18 hits in the game to go on to win 12-5.

In Game Two Dallas used a three-run second and fourth to jump out to a considerable lead. Nathan Patton (McKinney, Texas) hit a no doubt two-run homerun over the left field fence for his first homerun on the season. Jaylen Camarillo (Georgetown, Texas) gave up a leadoff homerun, but ended up striking out five straight batters and finished with a career-high eight on the day. Patton ended with four RBI in the contest to help UD win Game Two 7-2.

Dallas took a 2-1 lead after inning number one. Ty McCain drove in a sacrifice fly to put HPU up early, but Dallas responded with RBI by Jessup Scott (Lewiston, Idaho) and Luke Boylson (Fairview, Texas) to put UD on top. Noah Payne then hit a two-out grand slam over the left field wall to help the Yellowjackets regain the lead. Patton drove in two RBI in the bottom half of the second inning as both teams traded punches early on. Pitching settled down on both sides as both teams were held scoreless in the third.  

Howard Payne got two men in scoring position in the fourth inning. Joshua Gerig singled through the left side to drive in a run. Ty McCain followed that up with single almost in the same spot to bring in another run. UD got out a jam by getting RJ Roberts to ground into an inning ending double play. HPU tacked on five runs in the last three innings. Boylson put UD on the board after reaching on a fielder's choice and driving in Patton, but the Yellowjackets offense would be too much as they took the first game.

Payne finished 4-5 with five RBI, scored four runs and drew a walk to lead HPU. David Groves went 3-4 scored two runs and drove in one man. Four other Yellowjackets had a two-hit day. Joshua Gerig also had two RBI. Graham White pitched two innings of work, gave up four runs with one strikeout. Kory Owen pitched two innings as he only gave up one hit. Ryan Richardson, Connor Lowe, and Ethan Cerna pitched the final innings, combining for one hit.

Dallas was led by Michael Jaquez (Irving, Texas) who had two hits in four trips to the plate. Patton and Boylson both had two RBI. Jordan Stickler (Grand Rapids, Mich.) grabbed two walks and a double. Scott also drove in one run. Kyle Neel (Houston, Texas) got the start on the mound. His final line was 3.1 innings pitched, six hits, seven earned runs, with three strikeouts. William Bresnahan (Windham, N.H.) finished the final 3.2 innings on the mound for UD.

Cade Varrichio led off Game Two with a homerun. Dallas loaded up the bases in their half after two walks and a fielding error, but got three-straight outs including an inning ending double play. Camarillo struck out two batters and picked off Keldon Crawford in the second.

Joseph Vondrachek (North St. Paul, Minn.) led the Dallas half with a single and two stolen bases. Maximilian Costello, (Anchorage, Alaska) who got his first start on the season, drove in a run with a bunt down the third base line. Stickler added a RBI with a two-strike groundout to the right side. Patton finished off a three-run second by hitting a sacrifice fly to center field. Both teams challenged but were unable to bring any runs across in the third.

After a one-two-three top of the fourth, Dallas grabbed three runs once again in their half. Patton blasted a ball to left field for a two-run bomb. Scott followed that up with a triple to deep center field. He eventually scored thanks to a single up the middle by Boylson.

Ryan Flores came in relief for Dallas on the mound in the fifth frame. He got out of a jam by rolling up a double play to get out of the inning. Stickler grabbed a bunt single and a stolen base with two outs. Patton continued his hot hitting by driving him in with a single up the middle. HPU notched one run in the sixth, but Dallas pitching held the Yellowjackets to just three hits to secure the home victory.

Patton led Dallas with a 2-3 production at the plate, driving in a season-high four runs. Stickler was 2-3 with a RBI, a walk, and three stolen bases. Boylson finished 2-4 with one RBI. Vondrachek had two stolen bases and one run scored. Camarillo pitched four innings, gave up one hit, one run, and eight strikeouts. Flores pitched two innings, giving up two hits and one run, with three strikeouts. Jamie Wallace (Crockett, Texas) closed out the seventh allowing no hits and no runs.

Varrichio, Crawford, and Nolyn Box had the three hits for HPU. Jacob Rodriguez and Varrichio scored runs. The Yellowjackets used five pitchers in the outing.
