Crusaders Win Game 1; Finish Two-Game Sweep after Weather Cancels Sunday's Action

CLARKSVILLE, Ark. - The University of Dallas baseball team won Game 1 of the series versus University of the Ozarks (AR) 8-6. The Crusaders had a six-run third inning as five-different UD players drove in runs. Dallas tacked on a run in the fourth and the fifth to take an 8-1 lead into the final inning. The Eagles rallied for a five-run bottom half of the seventh with two outs. Dallas escaped with the win after William Bresnahan (Windham, N.H.) shut the door.

Dallas grabbed a 5-3 lead in Game 2 after a three-run fourth. The game was suspended after the eighth inning due to darkness.

Dallas was held to two baserunners through the first two innings, as both teams were held scoreless after two. In the third inning Dallas was able to load up the bases with nobody out. Two batters late Zachary Taylor (Humble, Texas) got hit by a pitch to bring in the first Crusaders run. Luke Boylson (Fairview, Texas) followed that up with a two-run double to right center. Jessup Scott (Lewiston, Idaho) then grounded out to third base to bring in Taylor. Paul Scioli (Lubbock, Texas) kept the inning alive with a double to left center to bring in Boylson. Mark Peterson (Cincinnati, Ohio) capped off the third with a single to left field to put UD up 6-0. In the bottom half of the inning the Eagles pushed a run across to get on the board.

Boylson recorded a walk to start the fourth frame. He eventually stole second. With two outs at hand, Peterson singled down the left field line to bring in the seventh Dallas run. With two outs in the top half of the fifth, Dallas rallied once again. Scioli walked to bring Peterson to the plate. With two runners on base, Peterson reached on an error by the pitcher, as Boylson came in to score. Conrad Voss (Corona, Calif.) pitched a stellar game going six innings, allowing one run off two hits. He also struck out three batters.

Dallas took its 8-1 lead into the final inning. Dakota Ebarb reached on an error to begin the inning. Ozarks battled in a two-out rally to score five runs before Bresnahan recorded his first career-save coming in to record the final out.

Scott went 3-4 on the day driving in two RBI and notching one double. Boylson had two RBI on a 1-3 effort from the plate. Peterson had a 2-4 day with a double and one RBI in his season debut. Jordan Stickler (Grand Rapids, Mich.) had two successful stolen base attempts.

Both teams were held scoreless in the first two innings. In the bottom of the third, Zach Stanley walked and stole second base. After another walk for the Eagles, Stanley stole third base. He eventually broke the scoreless tie after he came in on a sacrifice fly. In the top half of the fourth Dallas found some rhythm. With two outs Peterson walked to put two on base. Joseph Griesbauer (Troy, Mo.) was hit by a pitch to load up the bases. Seth Hanson (Apache Junction, Ariz.) then walked to bring across the first run. Scioli kept the line moving with a double to left field as Peterson and Griesbauer both scored.

Ozarks pushed across a run in the fourth, but Dallas pitching stopped the scoring in its tracks leaving two Eagles on base.

Josh Abalos (Lewisville, Texas) used his speed with a bunt single and a stolen base. He came across to score off the Scott ground out, as UD took a 4-2 lead to the sixth inning. Dallas loaded up the bases in the sixth, but Ozarks got Dallas to ground out to get out of the jam unscathed.

Abalos started the seventh the same was he started the fifth with a single and a stolen base. He made it to third on a wild pitch. Boylson batted him in with a sacrifice fly to centerfield. The Eagles responded with a run in the seventh to make it a 5-3 game.

Both teams failed to score in the eighth after Dallas left the bases loaded once again.

Taylor got the nod to pitch Game 2. He finished with 4 innings pitched, giving up one earned run on two hits. Tyler Montemayor (Boerne, Texas) came in relief to pitch four innings and only allowing one run with three strikeouts.   

The game was called on Sunday morning due to weather so Dallas was awarded the win after eight innings. 


UP NEXT

Dallas will be back home to take on LeTourneau University next weekend. The series will begin on Saturday (Feb.18) with a doubleheader set to start at 12:00 p.m. The series will wrap up on Sunday with first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m.
