Baseball Splits DH vs. Sul Ross on Opening Day

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas baseball team split its twinbill against Sul Ross State University on opening day. The Crusaders won Game One 8-5 after the team exploded for five runs in the second inning. With two runs in and two outs Zachary Taylor (Humble, Texas) smoked a home run to right field to put Dallas up 6-3. The Lobos then scored two runs in the top of the sixth, but Luke Boylson (Fairview, Texas) crushed a two-run round-tripper to left center to help Dallas grab its first win on the season.

In Game Two Sul Ross put up a 10-spot on the board in the top of the second. The Lobos scored five more in the third as they went on to win 16-0 with the game being called after six-innings.

Sul Ross started the game out scoring two runs in the top of the first off a Dallas error. Chris York and Joseph Sanchez both put the Lobos up early after by reaching base with strong hits. Jordan Stickler (Grand Rapids, Mich.) singled to open up the Dallas first. Stickler stole second and eventually third. He came across to score the Crusaders first run off the Lobos wild pitch. York's sacrifice fly in the second led to Ryan Acebedo to put SRSU up 3-1 after two innings.

The bottom of the second is when the bats of Dallas awoke. Josh Abalos (Lewisville, Texas) reached base off an error to help the baserunners advance. Zach Salomon (Oklahoma City, Okla.) scored on that encounter. Taylor then blasted a ball over the right field fence to push UD out to a 4-3 lead. Jessup Scott (Lewiston, Idaho) kept the offense going with double and an RBI. Dallas took this 6-3 lead all the way into the sixth. Conrad Voss (Corona, Calif.) kept the Lobos in check as he was able to finish with five-inning pitched and two strikeouts, including a three-up, three-down third.  

Joseph Sanchez pushed a Lobos run across in the sixth with a sacrifice fly. Wesley Moss made things interesting after he stole home to get SRSU within one run (6-5). In the bottom half of the inning, Boylson helped UD pull away with a two-run dinger. Jamie Wallace (Crockett, Texas) who came in relief in the sixth, finished out the seventh only allowing one baserunner to complete the save.

Taylor led the Crusaders with three RBI. Boylson added two, as Scott added one insurance run. Stickler led the team with two stolen bases, while Abalos added one. Voss grabbed the win allowing three earned runs in five innings of work.

Sanchez and York both had 2-2 efforts each grabbing one RBI. Moss had three stolen bases on the afternoon. Marquez got the loss after five earned runs off of five hits. Sul Ross used six pitchers in the losing effort.

SRSU dominated Game 2 after they scored 10 runs in the second inning. The Lobos then struck for five runs in the top of the third to put things out of reach, as the eventually took a 16-0 win. Dallas was held to just four hits as Russell went 4.1 innings pitched along with four strikeouts.

Bo Justin Martinez led the Lobos with three RBI in a 1-3 effort. Five other Lobos found the RBI column.

Paul Scioli (Lubbock, Texas) gathered two hits in the game.
