Hanson and Boylson Homer in Game 1; Baseball drops Pair of 6-5 Finals
IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas baseball team fell in two 6-5 decisions on Saturday versus Schreiner University. In the final series of the year, the Crusaders rallied in their last turn to hit both games, but were unsuccessful at completing a comeback in either.
In game one, Seth Hanson (Apache Junction, Ariz.) and Luke Boylson (Fairview, Texas) homered to give Dallas an early advantage. However, the Mountaineers struck for five runs in the fifth to go up the rest of the way.
The second contest began with the squads exchanging three runs in the third. A throwing error for what would have been the third out of the fourth allowed Jordan Stickler (Grand Rapids, Mich.) to score all the way from first and give UD its only lead of the game. Schreiner responded with two in the next half inning to go back up, and would break a later tied score with the winning run coming in thanks to an error in the eighth.

Things were scoreless the first two and a half innings for both sides. Hanson got the Crusaders on the board with their first hit on his team-leading seventh home run of the campaign. Boylson then pulled out for second in the team category with his third round-tripper in the next home inning. Mark Peterson (Cincinnati, Ohio) doubled the previous at bat and just had missed deep in left center off the wall. The two came in to give UD a 3-run edge.
Conrad Voss (Corona, Calif.) made the start on the hill for Dallas and avoided trouble until the fifth. The Mountaineers ended up batting around with 10 hitters coming up that frame. Five runs erased the lead and shifted the momentum for the road team. A couple errors kept the inning alive for SU, and a trio of singles that led to four ribbies ended the afternoon for Voss.
The Mountaineers added a run in the seventh, but UD countered with two in their next turn to hit after the seventh inning stretch. Stickler went the other way for a one-out hit, and then Jessup Scott (Lewiston, Idaho) doubled to deep center plating the hustling Stickler. After a strikeout, Peterson kept his RBI streak alive at seven games with a knock to center.
Down a run, the Crusaders loaded the bases in the eighth. A pitch got to the backstop, but the ricochet came right back to Schreiner's catcher Ryan Ragle who tagged out Maximilian Costello (Anchorage, Alaska) trying to tie the game.
In the ninth, UD would generate two-out walks by Peterson and Boylson, but dropped the opener of the three-game set.
Stickler (2-2) and Peterson (2-3) recorded multiple hit games. The first five hitters in the lineup and seven of the starters recorded at least one hit. The Crusaders were outhit 11-9, and left eight on base.
Voss allowed no earned runs in the loss. Jamie Wallace (Crocket, Texas) surrendered just a run on four hits in the last 4.1 innings of relief.
Schreiner was led by Josh Gilliam with a 2-for-5, three RBI, and run scored. He did triple, while Hudson Valenti and Miguel Quinones doubled for the other knocks for extra bases. Quinones was a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish.
Kyle Baird earned the win in the start. He allowed three runs on six hits through six innings. He walked three and fanned seven. Payton Stanford recorded the last four outs to earn the save. Schreiner pitching struck out 10.

It was a similar start for both teams, as the first run on the board didn't occur until the third. This time it was the Mountaineers striking first. Singles by Ernest Ortiz and Ben Benavides put the guests in front 2-0. After a Gilliam stole second, Ortiz would advance home on the throw going into the outfield.
UD followed that three-run third with one of its own to equal the score back. Patton singled through the left side to drive in two runs. A sacrifice fly by Boylson tied the game.
An error by the Mountaineers gave the Crusaders good fortune the next home inning, as Stickler scored the second time in as many innings.
Gilliam continued to do harm with the bat as he dropped a single in the top of the fifth to right field that scored Benavides and Quinones from scoring position.
Patton cracked a double to left center in the bottom of the sixth to knot the game again at five. The RBI leader eclipsed three for that column the fourth time this season.
Dallas would be unable to score anymore the rest of the game, and left 13 runners on base overall. This included the bases loaded with one out in the ninth.
A scoreless seventh left the game tied, but then Schreiner picked up the go-ahead run as Reece Hohhertz advanced home after Sam Pistrui stole second and the throw went into center.
The Crusaders battled the last six outs to counter, but would end up falling in their seventh straight one-run final. Six have been conference games.
Patton went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI, while Stickler contributed another 2-for-2 on the day and walk have him reach every plate appearance in the twinbill.
Tyler Montemayor (Boerne, Texas) hurled six innings and allowed five runs (3 earned) on five hits and four walks. He recorded UD's only strikeout. It was consecutive outings the freshman logged six or more innings, and only the third time this spring.
William Bresnahan (Windham, N.H.) got saddled with the loss as he was charged the go-ahead run allowed. Andrew Magness (San Antonio, Texas) finished the last five outs.
Both teams tallied seven hits overall. Ortiz and Quinones etched 2-for-4 outings apiece for SU.
Caleb Allen threw 7.2 innings in the start. He yielded five runs (4 earned) on seven hits, while working around four walks. His two strikeouts were the only ones by four pitchers in the Maroon. Lance Martin earned the save with the last two outs secured.
