Baseball Falls Short in Nailbiter at No. 1 Trinity; Swept in 2 Games Overall
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of Dallas baseball team hung tight with the nationally top-ranked Trinity University Tigers in the first game of a three-game set on Saturday.
Conrad Voss (Corona, Calif.) pitched his longest career outing, going into the bottom of the ninth. Seth Hanson (Apache Junction, Ariz.) scored the tying run in the top of the seventh to knot the game a third time. Dallas could not complete the upset, as Trinity's Jack Wisniewski notched the game-winning RBI for the walk-off.
After the Tigers avoided their third straight loss of the season, the offense used seven runs in the bottom of the first to lead them to a 9-5 victory in game two.

Mark Peterson (Cincinnati, Ohio) ripped an RBI-single through the left side to score Jordan Stickler (Grand Rapids, Mich.). The leadoff hitter started the game by reaching on an error.
Dallas held the 1-0 lead through an inning and a half, before Wisniewski hit a ball to left field that scored Michael Goodrich.
A double to right center by Jessup Scott (Lewiston, Idaho) brought home Nathan Patton (McKinney, Texas) in the next half inning. That was the lone base knock for extra bases in the game for UD.
The number 1 ranked Tigers grabbed the lead for the first time on the day in the fifth inning. Blake Frampton drove in the game-tying run on a sacrifice fly ball to center. Wisniewski scored. Logan Morrison singled home Joey Pecoraro later that frame. Both runs counted unearned due to an earlier error.
There were a combined five errors in the game, with Trinity being charged three.
An aggressive Crusaders offense did not go quietly, despite having to muster six hits. Hanson led off the seventh with a single to left for the only hit that scoring inning. A hit by pitch to Michael Ilardi (Atascocita, Texas) put two on. After a strikeout for the first retired batter, Hanson stole third. He hustled home as Stickler bounced into a fielder's choice that made it a 3-3 ballgame in the late stages.
Maximilian Costello (Anchorage, Alaska) stole second in the ninth to give UD three total in the game. The freshman pinch ran for Ilardi after he notched a two-out single. Costello raced to third on a passed ball, but would be stranded.
Trinity mounted an immediate threat in the last regular inning on a Parker Cormack single and Michael Davis double down the left field line. After Goodrich drew the intentional walk, the Crusaders got a force out at home. Another grounder would not be as friendly to the road squad, as Wisniewski earned the hit for the walk-off.
Six individuals etched a hit for Dallas, including batters in the two through five in the lineup. Voss threw 8.1 innings in the start. The left-hander yielded four runs (2 earned) on eight hits. He walked one and struck out five – which is one shy of his season-best.
Trinity's hero, Wisniewski garnered a 2-for-4 with the two RBI and run scored. Morrison logged the other 2-for-4 performance for a multi-hit game. Davis, Goodrich, and Pecoraro stroked the only extra-base hits for doubles for the Tigers.
Brendan Meyer tossed six innings in the no-decision. He allowed three runs (2 earned) on five hits, a walk, and five strikeouts. Corey Cater struck out six opponent hitters in the final three innings. He only had the lone hit allowed.

The Crusaders took another 1-0 advantage in the top of the first. Like game one, Peterson and Stickler were able to garner the RBI and run scored, respectively.
Trinity countered immediately with seven runs in the home half of the inning to put the game out of reach early. Rafe Chaumette singled through the right side to tie the game at 1-1. On that same play there was a bad throw that led to a Morrison scoring on the costly error.
John Tucker doubled with the bases loaded to clear the bags on a ball sent down the left field line. Pecoraro capped the high-scoring inning with a two-run homer.
Another run in the second stretched the lead to seven runs (8-1), but Dallas fought back to eventually close the gap to the final margin of four. Zachary Taylor (Humble, Teas) singled home Patton through the left side. Hanson dropped a single inside the fight field line to bring in Boylson.
Hanson got picked off in the sixth, but allowed Boylson to break home while the rundown had to be completed. Boylson finished with two ribbies, as his grounder to short allowed Patton to score his second time that later meeting of the twinbill.
For the second time that day, the Crusaders were held to six hits. Half of them occurred form the team's top leader offensively, Patton. His 3-for-4, double, and two runs headline the offense this matchup.
Austin Anderson (Waxahachie, Texas) did not record an out in the start. Four runs on two hits got charged to him. Tyler Montemayor (Boerne, Texas) ended up throwing the last 6.1 innings of relief. He gave up the lone run on five hits. Montemayor also posted three strikeouts.
Tucker led the Tigers with three RBI on his 2-for-4 showing. Chaumette contributed a 2-for-4 performance as well. The two were the only players that posted multiple hits in the game. Trinity notched 10 hits as a team in the second .
Ian Hussian logged 5.2 innings with six hits, four runs (3 earned). He struck out 10. Jeff Lonnecker completed the last 3.1 innings for his third save on the season.
