Baseball cruises in Non-Conference Series Opener on Friday

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas baseball team erupted for a season-high in runs and tied a season-most in hits a third time en route to defeating Dallas Christian College in the non-conference series opener Friday.

The home Crusaders tallied runs through the first five innings, and were able to cruise despite having to play through some light showers in the middle of a very windy afternoon.

(Game Information) (Final 7 innings)

Team Scores: Dallas Christian (4), Dallas (18)

Team Records: Dallas Christian (4-24), Dallas (10-20)

Pitcher Records: W) Voss (4-6), L) Katlin (0-1)

Jordan Stickler (Grand Rapids, Mich.) started the game by reaching base via a hit by pitch. He immediately stole second in what pushed him to a tie for sixth all-time with 46. He is now even with Adam Farris and Nathan Aviles.

Dallas was able to plate three runs as Mark Peterson (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Zach Taylor (Humble, Texas) knocked RBI hits. Between their ribbies was a passed ball that had allowed Nathan Patton (McKinney, Texas) to scamper home.

The Crusaders doubled their advantage with another three runs in the home half of the second inning. It was the middle of the lineup again doing the damage, as Patton singled to center and Peterson found a hole up the middle to score the other two runs that frame.

Conrad Voss (Corona, Calif.) fired five innings in the start. He only had allowed a hit – double – through the first four innings. That double in the second was erased quickly, as Cruz Barrea got picked off and tagged out running to third. Voss also had a 3-pitch inning in the top of the third to keep the UD offense coming back up.

Taylor then was part of the next two scoring plays, as he scored on a wild pitch for the lone run in the third. Taylor then doubled to center to score Peterson. A Seth Hanson (Apache Junction, Ariz.) completed the 9-0 start that Dallas posted through four.

Taylor would be a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two doubles. Both of his two-baggers occurred his last two at bats.

Voss would surrender a run in his last inning, but did leave the bases loaded. The left-hander ended up allowed four total hits, walked one, and struck out six.

The Crusaders then doubled their scoring output at that juncture with nine runs in the fifth to extend the margin. The home team sent 13 batters to the plate, and began pinch hitting the second time through the order. Maximilian Costello (Anchorage, Alaska) and Paul Scioli (Lubbock, Texas) came off the bench and stroked doubles that each scored a pair of runners.

UD amassed 17 hits, which the team had done once in February (Game 3 at Sul Ross State) and March (Game 2 at Southwestern University). Peterson notched a career-high 4 hits, and surpassed three in a game for the third time this season and fourth in the junior's career. Taylor followed with his three-hit performance, and then Patton and Luke Boylson (Fairview, Texas) rounded out the multi-hit games with two.

The Crusaders combined for six doubles (season-high XBH), which half came from the reserves in the late stages. Joseph Griesbauer (Troy, Mo.) and Boylson were the other extra-base hits that were part of this group.

Seven different players had at least two RBI, and six players scored at least two runs. Stickler, Patton, and Peterson made up that latter category with three runs apiece. Stickler reached base safely each time up, as he followed his first plate appearance with a trio of walks. The Crusaders garnered eight overall.

Dallas Christian was led by Cameron Henderson offensively with a 2-for-4 showing, a triple, two RBI, and a run scored. Adriel Davila contributed a 2-for-3 and the team's other double and hit for extra bases.

Anthony Katlin was saddled in the loss by allowing nine runs on 10 hits. He walked four and struck out two.
