IRVING, Texas – Saturday's doubleheader began with a sunny day and featured a lopsided final to give No. 20 Centenary College a series win. Later on that afternoon the University of Dallas baseball team was competing again in a narrow ballgame, and the skies opened to suspend the finale in the bottom of the seventh with two on and a full count to Seth Hanson (Apache Junction, Ariz.). Dallas was behind 5-4 in that one.

Nationally ranked Centenary pulled out to a double-digit advantage in the first two innings, and were able to boast 18 hits en route to the Crusaders second loss to start Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) play.

It was a familiar start, as Chris Zapata blasted a two-run homer in his first at bat to put the Gents on the board first. Two more runs came around to give the guests a four-run edge.

The Crusaders responded with an immediate chance to get back even. Jordan Stickler (Grand Rapids, Mich.) walked, but was then caught stealing second. Josh Abalos (Lewisville, Texas) then walked and Nathan Patton (McKinney, Texas) connected on a double to left field. A strikeout and ground out kept UD from getting in the run column.

Then seven runs on seven hits the next time for the road squad ballooned the lead to 11. Jamie Wallace (Crocket, Texas) was saddled with the loss, as the starter went 1.1 innings and allowed nine runs.

Centenary totaled 18 hits with five counting for extra bases. Peyton Cormane, who was part of a trio of three-hit batters (3-3), would double and triple in the game. Zapata boasted four RBI, while Cody Crowder (3-4) and Cameron Guin (3-4) respectively posted a double and triple.

Zachary Taylor (Humble, Texas) pounded his second home run this season in the fourth to keep Dallas from being shutout. His homer just cleared the short right field fence. Patton added a 2-for-3 to stay hot in the series. Joseph Griesbauer (Troy, Mo.) pinched hit and got a knock in his lone at bat. He stole a base, too.

Dylan Barr (Aurora, Colo.) recorded the only strikeouts (3) by UD pitching in two innings.

Devillier threw six innings and allowed the run on five hits. He walked three, while fanning five.

Both teams traded a run in the first inning. Stickler again led off for Dallas' first plate appearance with a walk, which gave him an on-base streak of 50 dating back to 2017. The junior stole second and then advanced to third on a single to left by Abalos. Jessup Scott (Lewiston, Idaho) picked up the ribbie on a sacrifice fly out.

Centenary went back ahead by posting two runs in its next turn to hit. A successful suicide squeeze bunt broke the tie, and then a wild pitch added to the lead. However, Stickler prevented any further runs on an outfield assist that nabbed Gage Garber.

Stickler went back to work offensively by using his speed to beat out a bunt single in the third. He stole second, and then went to third as Abalos bunted for a single. Two batters later, Scott again came through on a sacrifice fly out.

Two more runs in the top of the fourth pushed the edge for the guests to 5-2.

Conrad Voss (Corona, Calif.) entered in the fourth after the runs had scored and recorded the next 11 outs to keep the margin there. He pitched in the series opener the day prior.

Light rain had started in the middle innings, but did not dampen the Crusaders effort for trying to even the score. Patton was able to single in Stickler from second on a ball that had just snuck through the left side after being slightly deflected.

Dallas then left two on in the sixth. With the rain coming down harder in the seventh, it was a matter of how much longer the game would be allowed on before stoppage. Stickler reach by being hit. After one out was made, Patton singled up the middle to get the runners on the corners. Scott tallied his third RBI as he grounded out for the second. Patton moved to scoring position, and then Mark Peterson (Cincinnati, Ohio) was hit on a 0-1 pitch. With Hanson hitting, a ball was thrown, and then Centenary called upon Cole Lavergne to pitch. The count was worked full, and then visible lightening sent the players to the dugouts and led to the field being tarped.

This suspenseful plate appearance will resume at 12 p.m. on Sunday.
