Baseball unable to Finish 3-Game Sweep, as Texas Wesleyan wins in 11 innings

FORT WORTH, Texas – A run in the 8th inning knotted the game at 4-4, and the University of Dallas baseball team found itself in its first extra inning contest of 2018. The Crusaders came up just short of sweeping Texas Wesleyan, as a walk-off single by Mark Schreiner scored CJ Ateek in the 11th to finalize a 5-4 decision.

Down a run in the 1st, Enrique Vigil (San Antonio, Texas) ripped a two-out double to give UD its only lead of the game in the 2nd inning. After adding a run two innings later, the Rams reclaimed the edge by putting up a trio of runs in the fifth.

Three pitchers for the guests held Texas Wesleyan without a run for 5.2 innings. Abraham Griesbauer (Troy, Mo.) struck out the first two opposing batters, but Donnie Lopez doubled to right. He was lifted for a pinch runner, which was Ateek who came around on the game-winning base knock by the next hitter.

Zachary Taylor (Humble, Texas) made his first appearance this spring on the mound. He allowed an RBI-double to Michael Davila, that scored Ted Wisdom who reached by being hit by a pitch to start things. Taylor recorded 3 fly outs to complete the lone inning he tossed.

Jessup Scott (Lewiston, Idaho) started the second with a walk. Seth Hanson (Apache Junction, Ariz.) followed an out with a double down the left field line. With two runners in scoring position, Vigil came through with another two-bagger.

The Crusaders totaled a quartet of doubles, which counted for all their extra base hits in the game. Luke Boylson (Fairview, Texas) and Scott notched the other half not mentioned.

Dallas extended its advantage to 3-1 thanks to a passed ball that allowed Joseph Vondrachek (North St. Paul, Minn.) to race across the plate in the 4th.

Lopez singled to right center for an RBI, and Julio Ibarra doubled to push the Rams ahead with Jacob Barfield and Lopez scoring on the play.

Scott smacked a lead-off double in the 8th. He finished with the team's only multi-hit game (2-3), and eventually crossed home a second time on the day to even the score late. Boylson had sacrifice bunted the catcher over to put him 90 feet away. Hanson did his part by lifting a sacrifice fly that made it a new ballgame.

The Crusaders threatened with runners in scoring position with two outs in both extra frames. In the 10th, Scott singled to left and Boylson laced a double down the right field line. They were stranded as Hanson struck out.

Jordan Stickler (Grand Rapids, Mich.) bunted for a single and advanced to second on a balk. He was unable to be moved any further. The center fielder also walked in the 4th inning to keep his streak of reaching base safely intact at 44 in games dating back to last season. He has reached in all 13 appearances this year.

Conrad Voss (Corona, Calif.), who picked up a win in two relief innings of game 1 on Saturday; logged four shutout frames from the 7th through 10th. He yielded three hits, while not allowing any runs. He also did not walk any.

The lefty had followed fellow classmate and southpaw Nick Goehring (Phoenix, Ariz.), who escaped a base-loaded jam in the 5th. Goehring did not allow a run through 1.1 innings.

Six of UD's pitchers that stepped on the rubber Sunday threw from the left side. Griesbauer was the fifth in a row.

Texas Wesleyan outhit the guests 10-8. Davila and 11th-inning hero, Lopez, collected the only multi-hit games with two apiece. Corley Huffsticker fanned eight hitters in four innings during the start. He surrendered three hits, three runs (2 earned), and walked three.

Four different arms on the Rams' staff amassed 17 strikeouts. Robinson Parker garnered three of them, as he worked around the three hits in both extra frames.
