Crusaders post 3-Run 7th; Earn Series Win versus Schreiner in Rubber Game

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas baseball team concluded the remainder of Saturday's suspended game with a 6-2 setback to Schreiner University. The Crusaders claimed their third straight home series win and second in a row within conference play in a 4-1 victory.

Team Records: Schreiner (8-25, 3-11 SCAC), Dallas (8-24, 4-7 SCAC)

The Mountaineers had taken advantage with a run in three of the first four innings. Marco Carreon lifted Schreiner up for the entire contest in the first at-bat on the guest side. He singled up the middle to score Sam Pistrui. Connor Ver Schuur came in on a balk in the third to push the score to 2-0.

Dallas countered with a run in the bottom half of the third. Freshman Josh Abalos (Lewisville, Texas) placed a sacrifice bunt down and was out on the play for the first out. Schreiner conceded a run as classmate Mark Resnick (Houston, Texas) came home. The catcher doubled to start the frame.

A run was added in the fourth for the Mountaineers and then things remained 3-1 until play resumed Sunday afternoon. On Saturday, freshman Thomas Martin (Vancouver, Wash.) was batting in a three ball, one strike count; when action halted due to rain. Martin drew the walk as the game picked up, but was out on a double play the next at-bat. Martin ended his team-long and personal best 13-game hitting streak.

Schreiner put together a two-out scoring stretch with three runs in its ninth inning. The Crusaders got a run back from junior Avery Arnold's (McKinney, Texas) sacrifice fly in the bottom part of the inning.

- Both teams produced nine hits.

- Junior JP Fasone (Englewood, Colo.) and Arnold notched multi-hit games for UD. Fasone cracked the other double with Resnick's.

GAME TWO INFORMATION

Team Scores: Schreiner University (1), University of Dallas (4)

Team Records: Texas Lutheran (8-26, 3-12 SCAC), Dallas (9-24, 5-7 SCAC)

Pitcher Records: W) Marshall (2-2), L) Kitchens (1-2)

Dallas broke a 1-1 ballgame with a three-run seventh and junior William Marshall (Frisco, Texas) picked up his second win in as many days by throwing a career-high 4.1 innings out of the bullpen.

The Crusaders got on the board first as Fasone doubled to left-center field and drove in Arnold. The leadoff tandem of the lineup in this game produced the offense that inning with two outs. Schreiner evened things in the fourth inning as Quintana singled back through the middle for an RBI.

It was the Mountaineers that gained momentum in the fifth with a first and second, two-out threat. UD opted for Marshall to replace Villanueva, who started on the hill for the home squad. Marshall was greeted with a sharp single to left field and that filled the bases. Trevor Wren grounded back to Marshall and ended the inning.

That was the first of two bases loaded jams Marshall endured in his eventual longest outing of the season. The other was in a momentum swinging seventh. With one out and every bag occupied, Marshall recovered on a sharp liner back at him and threw out Ben Benavides on a force at home. The right-hander next got Wren on a groundout to second to escape unharmed.

With the knotted game intact, freshman Paul Scioli (Lubbock, Texas) singled with one out to center field. Peterson walked and freshman Jordan Stickler (Grand Rapids, Mich.) punched a deep ball that dropped just inside fair territory by the left field line. Eventual game-winning run would come through as Scioli. Arnold extended the gap with a two-RBI single to center.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

- Arnold continued his strong weekend with a season-high, three hits (3-4). The centerfielder led off for the first time this season and ballooned his hitting streak to seven games.

- Arnold also drove in a run each contest this series and has one in the past four. He has totaled six during that span.

- Seven of UD's nine hits came from top four spots in the lineup.

- San Roman posted the other multi-hit game. Fasone had the lone extra base hit.

- UD players with runs scored: Arnold, Scioli, Peterson, and Stickler.

- Marshall scattered four hits of shutout ball in 4.1 innings from the bullpen. He struck out four, which is third time to match second highest amount this spring. He has gone at least 4 innings, with two coming in these latest Dallas triumphs.

- Carreon went 3-for-5 to match a game-high in hits. Volovar added a pair of knocks and scored SU's lone run. He also had the only extra base hit. Carreon and Gio Datiz picked up stolen bases.

- Kolby Kitchens threw seven innings and allowed four runs on nine hits. He walked two and struck out one.
