Texas Lutheran powers Past Baseball on Saturday Sweep

SEGUIN, Texas – The University of Dallas baseball team fell in a doubleheader at Texas Lutheran University on Saturday. In game one, the Crusaders dropped a 9-3 decision and then a 5-1 final in the latter contest.


GAME ONE INFORMATION

The Bulldogs scored seven unanswered runs in the seventh and eighth inning combined to gain the opener of the three-game series. An early 2-0 lead gave the home team the edge with runs in the third and fifth innings.

Dallas cut the margin in half in the sixth inning as freshman Josh Abalos (Lewisville, Texas) drove in junior Avery Arnold (McKinney, Texas) on an RBI single to right field. Arnold had singled with two outs prior to center and stole his team-leading 11th base before the base knock.

An inning later, freshman Mark Peterson (Cincinnati, Ohio) tied the game, 2-2, with his 16th RBI of the season to drive in classmate Thomas Martin (Vancouver, Wash.). Martin led the inning off with hit to left field and kept the team's longest hitting streak this season alive at nine. Both RBI-knocks for the Crusaders occurred with two outs.

Texas Lutheran responded in the bottom half of the frame, rattling four runs on five hits to claim control of the game for good. Alejandro Gutierrez tripped to right center for the go-ahead run. After Justin Law singled him in, Keaton Bohrmann launched a two-run homer.

Trailing 9-2 in the final turn to bat for UD, freshman Jake McCoy (Forth Worth, Texas) pinch hit and smacked his first collegiate homer, and third of the game combined on both sides to round out the scoring.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

- McCoy hit the lone extra base hit for Dallas, as the team compiled eight total.

- Senior Rene Vargas, Jr. had a 2-for-4 performance.

- Four of the top five hitters in the UD lineup had a hit.

- Junior Eric Felchak (The Woodlands, Texas) was saddled with the loss. He went 6.1 innings and allowed five runs on nine hits. He walked one and struck out two.

- Texas Lutheran mustered 15 hits with a quartet of players have multiple ones. Law was a perfect 4-for-4 with the other home run. He drove in five.

- Bohrmann went 3-for-5, and Gutierrez and Rayce Gatlin added two hits apiece. Gutierrez hit one of two doubles, tripled, and scored three runs. Gatlin scored twice. Lincoln Baylor also doubled.

- Nathan Malinovsky pitched seven innings in the start. He allowed two runs on five hits, with a walk and four strikeouts.    


GAME TWO INFORMATION

Dallas took an early 1-0 advantage in the second game, but would relinquish it as the Bulldogs posted five straight runs. A two-run fourth lifted TLU ahead and a three-spot in the seventh pushed the contest out of reach to give the home squad a series win.

In the third inning, the Crusaders got a lead-off single by Arnold as he beat out an infield roller to short. After the centerfielder advanced to second on a groundout by Abalos, Vargas, Jr. doubled to left center for UD's lone run of the ballgame. Vargas, Jr. finished with four hits combined between the pair of matchups.

The Bulldogs struck for two in the bottom of the fourth as Bohrmann homered the second time that day with another two-run blast over left field. Law scored after being hit by a pitch prior. A three-run seventh was engineered by Gatlin's inside the park home run that scored Andrew Witten. Gutierrez tripled two batters later in right field to bring Riley Schaefer home.  

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

- Dallas had eight hits again for the second straight game of the series. Vargas, Jr. led the bunch with two doubles.

- Martin extended his hitting streak to a personal best of 10 with a knock in the third.

- Seven of UD's nine starters had a hit. Abalos and junior JP Fasone (Englewood, Colo.) drew walks. Fasone earned a hit this game after his six-game streak was snapped in game one.

- Sophomore Abraham Griesbauer (Troy, Mo.) went five innings in the start. The only runs allowed were on the home run, as he scattered five hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

- Juniors William Marshall (Frisco, Texas) and Cole Morden (Arlington, Texas) pitched 1.1 and 1.2 innings, respectively. Marshall struck out three and Morden added one and only allowed one hit.

- TLU produced 10 hits, with Whitten displaying a 4-for-4 effort. He doubled and stole a base. That was the lone multi-hit game for the Bulldogs. Bohrmann and Gatlin drove in a pair each on their round-trippers.

- Baylor threw five innings and danced around seven hits while allowing the lone run. He struck out four.

- Dallas stranded 10 runners.

- Dylan Murrell, Andrew Milone, Derek Cantu, and Drew Waller combined for the last four innings and combined to allow just one hit. Cantu walked two in the ninth, and Waller entered with the game-tying run on deck to earn the save.
