Baseball swept at No. 22 UT-Tyler Sunday

TYLER, Texas – The University of Dallas baseball team dropped a 21-7 decision on Sunday at No. 22 University of Texas at Tyler. The Patriots secured the sweep using two five-run innings to bolster a big day at the plate. Dallas did cut the deficit to 9-6 about halfway through the ballgame, but 12 of the final 13 runs were scored by the nationally ranked opponent.

GAME INFORMATION

Final: University of Dallas (7), University of Texas-Tyler (21)

Records: Dallas (2-4), UT-Tyler (3-0)

Pitching decisions: W) Imig (1-0) L) Griesbauer (0-1)

After an inning and a half of perfect baseball, UT-Tyler would erupt for five runs on four hits in the second inning. There was an error from the Crusaders that did cause all runs to be unearned in that frame.

Freshman Mark Resnick (Houston, Texas) got Dallas on the board with a single that scored senior John Howard (McKinney, Texas). The road team nipped the deficit to 5-4 by platting three more runs in the inning. Freshman Thomas Martin (Vancouver, Wash.) got the bases cleared on a two-out double. Sophomore Derek Valiska (Bastrop, Texas), freshman Josh Abalos (Lewisville, Texas), and Resnick all came home on the two-bagger.

The Patriots extended the advantage to 9-4 heading to the top of the fifth, but another pair of runs from the resilient Navy and White cut things to three.Valiska singled in junior Avery Arnold (McKinney, Texas), who led off with an infield hit to short stop. Freshman Mark Peterson (Cincinnatti, Ohio) lifted a sacrifice fly to center, and Abalos raced home. The second baseman and Valiska pulled a double steal three batters previously.

A five-run seventh and six-run eighth would be too much for the Crusaders to overcome late in the game.
