Dallas Baseball falls in Pitcher's Duel; Finish 0-2 on Saturday at No.22 UT-Tyler
TYLER, Texas – The University of Dallas baseball team dropped the first two games of a three-game series at No. 22 University of Texas at Tyler on Saturday. Dallas battled hard in the opener with a 2-1 setback coming off a walk-off by the Patriots in the seventh inning. The Crusaders were topped in the nightcap, 16-3.

In the first game, Dallas hung tight with the top 25 D3baseball.com Patriots in their home-opener. Both teams were held under five hits in this pitchers' duel, with neither team cracking the scoreboard until the fourth inning.
It would be the home team that got the advantage first with that run plated on a Brady McCoy single to center field. Trenton Buchhorn scored and broken up a no-hit bid through 3.1 innings with a knock to left field.
That lead lasted for one batter, as UT-Tyler ended the inning to strand runners on the corner, and Dallas knotted it on a home run to begin the fifth. Sophomore Cole Wessling (Denton, Texas) would do the damage with a blast over the center field wall for his first long ball with UD. It was the team's fourth on the campaign.
The seventh inning would be the difference for the Patriots. With game one of the twinbill in non-conference, the run for UT-Tyler acted as a walk-off in the pre-determined seven-inning contest. Briley Barnwell would race home for the game-winner on an error by the first baseman. The ball had been mishandled on a pickoff attempt that appeared to have caught the runner off guard.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
- Junior Ryan Hammonds (Cedar Hill, Texas) started for the Crusaders and threw six impressive innings while limiting UT-Tyler to a pair of hits, a run, to go with a pair of walks and strikeouts.
- Wessling had three of the team's four hits with a perfect day at the plate.
- Senior Rene Vargas, Jr. (San Antonio, Texas) tallied the other base knock in his lone at bat.
- For the Patriots, Cason Adams went seven innings and allowed a run on four hits. He fanned seven batters and allowed zero walks.
-Ben Romines came off the bench in the seventh for the other hit besides the ones mentioned earlier.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Dallas was able to escape the first two innings with none or limited damage, but a combined 15 runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings would be too difficult for the Navy and White to overcome.
Trailing 1-0, Buchhorn doubled to right field and Sam Lane tripled him in to give the Patriots a 3-0 advantage. UT-Tyler would eventually cap a seven-run frame on an RBI groundout to short stop by Michael Caruso. In the next home at bat, the Patriots poured five more runs to extend a 13-0 advantage.
The Crusaders had been quiet through the first four innings at the plate, but did post all their runs in the top of the fifth. Sophomore Derek Valiska (Bastrop, Texas) reached on an error by the leftfielder for UT-Tyler, and the miscue on the sequence allowed freshmen Josh Abalos (Lewisville, Texas) and Jake McCoy (Forth Worth, Texas) to score. Wessling added his second RBI overall between the two games on a sacrifice fly out to center that plated Valiska.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
-Freshman Thomas Martin (Vancouver, Wash.) notched a multiple hit outing with half of the team's four base knocks. He also added a walk.
- Abalos and McCoy smacked the other hits that helped create the scoring situations that happened for UD.
- Senior Brian Donley (Chicago, Ill.) pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. He allowed a hit, two walks, and fanned four opponents. The amount of punch outs marked a personal best for the right-hander. His previous best was April 13, 2014 versus Schreiner University with three in 1.2 innings.
- UT-Tyler was led by Kelly Dorsett with a 3-for-3 day and four RBI. He was a triple shy of the cycle, with a two-run homer coming in the fourth. The catcher worked two of the team's 11 free passes.
- Buchhorn and Graham Welch notched the other multiple hit games with two each. The Patriots compiled 12 hits with Bucchorn, Josh Anton, Briley Barnwell, Dorsett, and Welch ripping the doubles.
