YEAR IN REVIEW: Baseball

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas baseball team finished the 2015 spring season with a 10-26 record overall and 4-14 mark within the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC). Interim Head Coach Joe Myers completed first year at the helm after five seasons as the Crusaders' assistant coach.

NOTABLE MOMENTS

  • Earned first win of the year with 3-0 shutout versus Sul Ross State University on Jan. 31. Junior Denton Martin earned SCAC Pitcher-of-the-Week tossing seven innings and fanned 10 batters.
  • Won three of the first four contests on the schedule, and were 4-2 to open the campaign.
  • Closed the season on a four-game winning streak, the longest of the season.
  • Junior Luciano Villanueva was the lone player to crack a .300 batting average and paced the team with 39 hits, two triples, three home runs, and 19 RBI.
  • Senior Trevor Keele and sophomore Alex Stack tied for second on team with 37 base knocks. Keele tied fellow classmate Anthony Armstrong with a pair of long balls, too.
  • Villanueva was tabbed on D3baseball.com Team-of-the-Week for games of March 2-8. Ranked on the list as the designated hitter, Villanueva slugged .727 and accounted for five RBIs, which would be nearly half of the 11 runs totaled at East Texas Baptist University in the series. He added a pair of two-hit affairs, two runs scored, and a double.
  • Sophomore Ryan Hammonds went eight innings limited the opponents to three hits and a run in a 1-0 setback at Centenary College on Apr. 3.
  • Senior Martin Cronin logged eight innings and allowed a run in an eventual 2-1 setback at Austin College on Apr. 18.
  • Battled No. 16 (at the time) and eventual SCAC Champions Trinity University to 6-5 setback in game one of a three-game series on Feb. 21. Trailing one in the ninth, UD knot and later take the lead 5-4 on a Keele RBI groundout.
  • Secured largest margin of victory in 11-2 win against Whitman College after game one on Feb. 14.
  • Posted six runs, a team-most in an inning, in the fourth frame, on the final game of the spring to result in a 10-6 win versus Arlington Baptist College on Apr. 25.
  • Defeated Schreiner University in the final two of a three-game set to grab first conference series win of league play. In an 8-6 triumph to create a rubber game in the finale on Mar. 14; Villanueva launched game-tying homer in eighth and would provide an insurance run in the next inning by reaching on an error. Sophomore Zach San Roman hit the go-ahead single to score senior Nolan Kipp.
  • Villanueva managed another heroic with the go-ahead dinger in the ninth at Austin College to claim the series win in a 10-9. It was one of three hits and his second RBI. Keele earned the win with four scoreless final frames and tied a season-high five punch outs.
