UNIVERSITY OF DALLAS ATHLETICS

@UDallasBaseball unable to Sweep Schreiner on Sunday

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas baseball team (17-19, 7-8 SCAC) was unable to pull its third, three-game sweep of the campaign off and second in a row at home versus a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) opponent, as Schreiner University (14-23, 5-10 SCAC) won 7-2 and avoided the brooms Sunday.

After being limited to one run in 16 innings on Saturday, the Mountaineers struck for three in the fourth frame. Dallas junior Trevor Keele (Edgewood, Texas) flied out to center for a sacrifice fly that scored senior Mark Carlson (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) to cut the margin to a pair in the sixth.

Schreiner countered in its next trip to bat in the seventh and pushed the contest out of reach with four runs that frame. Overall the Mountaineers doubled the advantage in hits, 18-9. Freshman Avery Arnold (McKinney, Texas) did single a run to in the ninth to give him an RBI and hit all three games this series. Carlson was the only Crusader to notch more than one base knock with two.

The Mountaineers got most of their damage from the heart of the order going a combined 10-for-15). Chase Valdez and Marco Carreon were a dangerous duo each going 4-for-5. Brett Keckler added a 3-for-4 with a game-high three RBI.

That was more than enough support for Matt Barnett. The starter did well on the bump for the Maroon and White, as he pitched into the ninth and allowed both runs on nine hits. UD's starter Blake Palmer (Coppell, Texas) took the loss with three runs allowed on seven hits in 3.1 innings. After junior Jacob Bruns (Holland, Mich.) surrendered three runs in three innings, sophomore Brian Donley (Chicago, Ill.) and freshman Cole Morden (Arlington, Texas) threw 2.2 combined scoreless. Donley danced around five hits and fanned three in 1.2 innings.

The game wraps up Dallas' home record at 9-6. The Crusaders head to Southwestern University for three games on April 18-19. That series will conclude the regular season. Should the Crusaders finish in the top four, they would qualify for the SCAC Tournament.
