Bats Blast Schreiner in Game 1; Strong Pitching lifts @UDallasBaseball to DH Sweep

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas baseball team (17-18, 7-7 SCAC) moved to .500 in conference play and extended its winning streak to five in a row – all at Crusader Field – against league opponents with two wins over Schreiner University (13-23, 4-10 SCAC) on Saturday. Dallas blanked the Mountaineers 15-0 in game one, and prevailed in a pitching duel with a 2-1 final in game two.

Game 1 Recap

The Crusaders struck for a trio of three-run innings, and put away Schreiner in seven frames with six in the home team's last at-bat. Overall UD outhit the Mountaineers 17-2 and the guests had the only error committed by either side in the contest.

Dallas took an early advantage with three runs in the first inning. Juniors Trevor Keele (Edgewood, Texas) and Nolan Kipp (Folsom, Calif.) ripped RBI-singles for the first two runs. Freshman Avery Arnold (McKinney, Texas) dropped a sacrifice bunt for his first ribbie of the day. Overall in this game he had four RBI, which was one shy of senior Alex Thornton's (Fort Worth, Texas) game-high. Thornton drove in a quartet with his grand slam in the sixth. That round-tripper put an exclamation point for a Dallas offense that scored a season-high and surpassed double-digits in runs for the third time on the campaign.

The Crusaders also benefitted from perfect days at the plate by Keele (4-4) and freshman Patrick Stratton (Grand Prairie, Texas). Stratton's 3-for-3 was highlighted by a double to right field in the third which scored two runs and doubled the edge to 6-0 at the time.

Junior Martin Cronin (The Woodlands, Texas) got the win in six innings of his start. He only allowed a hit and a walk, while striking out five. Cronin improved to 6-3 on the season. A trio of Schreiner arms each gave up at least three earned runs. Joe Osinski was saddled with the loss in 1.1 frames. Brett Keckler singled in the third for the first hit by the road squad. Luke Byley came off the bench and added the other.

Game 2 Recap

Martin only yielded one run, which was unearned. He scattered five hits and walked none. Seven Mountaineers were sat down via a strikeouts. Keele earned the save with a scoreless ninth and pitched around one walk.
