@UDallasBaseball enjoys Home Doubleheader Sweep over ‘Roos

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas baseball team (14-15, 4-7 SCAC) claimed two victories over Austin College (4-20, 2-9) on Saturday to mark the first wins in conference at the friendly confines this spring. After edging the Maroon and Gold in a nail-biter in seven innings, Dallas rolled to an 8-2 triumph to secure its first SCAC series win.

Game 1 Recap

Both squads posted a run on the board in the first inning. Gus Daniel flew out for a sacrifice, but UD's sophomore Denton Martin (Denton, Texas) knotted the contest in the home half with an RBI-single for his only hit of the day. Another sacrifice fly got the 'Roos a brief lead in the third. The Crusaders used a sacrifice situation of their own to even things in the fourth, as sophomore Rene Vargas, Jr. (San Antonio, Texas) laid down a bunt to score junior Nolan Kipp (Folsom, Calif.).

Austin College snagged its third lead of the game with a pair of runs in its next at-bat in the fifth. A passed ball and error allowed the two runs to score on the same sequence.

The Crusaders overcame the defensive miscues with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore Jake Pierce (Tucson, Ariz.) laced a double for the first run, and then sophomore Luciano Villanueva (San Antonio, Texas) knotted the game with a single to left field to score Pierce. The game-winning run in the home seventh walked Dallas off thanks to an RBI hit from sophomore Tug McRoberts (Beaumont, Texas).

UD posted an 8-2 edge in the hits column but committed four errors compared to none by Austin College. Junior Trevor Keele (Edgewood, Texas), Pierce, and senior Alex Thornton (Fort Worth, Texas) contributed to the trio of extra base hits. Freshman Evan Eubanks (West, Texas) earned the win with a complete game. He yielded two hits and no earned runs, while walking three and fanning seven.

Game 2 Recap

Dallas broke the second contest open with five runs over the first two frames. After two came home in the Crusaders first at-bat, a three-spot propelled the team in front five runs. The 'Roos responded with a run in the third and fifth for their only ones of the game. Each scoring result for AC at those junctures of the game cut the deficit to four. Thornton had singled home Vargas Jr. in the fourth.

Four runs was as close as Austin College made the gap, thanks to a passed ball in the fifth and an error in the seventh by the guests.

Both teams reached double-digits in hits with the Crusaders pounding 18 to AC's 12. Dylan Day, who was part of a quintet of players in road jerseys to post multi-hit games, notched a double for the only hit for extra bags. Dallas' offense was fueled with two perfect performances at the plate by Keele and Vargas Jr. with each shelling four hits. This included the tandem combining two-of-three doubles. Thornton, Keele, and Vargas Jr. drove in two runs apiece.

Junior Martin Cronin (The Woodlands, Texas) twirled seven innings for the win. He allowed two runs on 10 hits, walked three, and struck out two. Freshmen Blake Palmer (Coppell, Texas) and Ryan Hammonds (Cedar Hill, Texas) threw a scoreless frame each. Josh Lewis for AC was saddled for the loss with five runs (4 earned) surrendered in 1.0 + inning. Mychael Parrish scattered 11 hits in 5.2 frames. He did only allow one earned run and struck out three.
