@UDallasBaseball gets the Brooms Out; Sweep Gents in non-conference Weekend

SHREVEPORT, La. – The University of Dallas baseball team (7-5) swept Centenary College of Louisiana (3-6) on Sunday to extend its longest winning streak of the season to three games. After combining to score six runs in 16 innings during Saturday's doubleheader, the Crusaders matched that amount in the third inning to turn the tables on an early Centenary lead en route to a 10-3 triumph.

Centenary gained its first lead of the series with two runs in the first inning. Aaron Quintanilla doubled and Michael Schimpf grounded out for an RBI to get the Gents on the scoreboard.

The Crusaders nipped the deficit with six runs in the third inning to capture the lead for good. UD only needed three hits, which sophomore Alex Benza (Lewisville, Texas) clobbered the final one for a three-RBI double to left center that opened the gap to 6-2. A trio of UD hitters were hit by pitch, including junior Luciano Villanueva (San Antonio, Texas) to get an RBI. Sophomore Denton Martin (Denton, Texas) drew a bases loaded RBI walk for the go-ahead run that changed the score to 3-2.

A run for the Gents in the sixth cut the deficit in half, but Dallas scored four runs in its last turn to bat to cap a fantastic weekend. The Crusaders outhit Centenary 12-5.

Senior Mark Carlson (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) and Benza each had game-highs in hits with three apiece. Carlson was perfect at the plate and had a walk to reach all four times. He formed a trio with Villanueva and sophomore Jake Piece (Tucson, Ariz.) in each scoring two runs. Villanueva notched three RBI to lead the game. Pierce recorded the other multiple hit game going 2-for-3. Both of his hits were doubles. Benza added one and so did Guadencio Lucca. Villanueva posted the fifth extra base for the guests with a triple.

Junior Jacob Bruns (Holland, Mich.) earned the win starting and going five innings. It was his first winning decision this year as he yielded two runs (0 earned) on three hits, a walk, and four strikeouts. Freshmen Cole Morden (Arlington, Texas) and William Marshall (Frisco, Texas) finished the last four frames. Morden tossed three of them.

Grant Debevec was saddled with the loss in 2.2 innings. He was charged six runs on three hits. Taylor Henry logged a game-high 5.1 innings.
