Baseball Overcomes Deficit for Win over Cardinal Stritch

The UD baseball team got back in the win column by overtaking the Cardinal Stritch University Wolves 6-5 in a neutral game in San Antonio, TX.  The victory puts UD at 5-13 thus far and ends a 6 consecutive game stretch on a positive note.

Righty Austin Cooper Afton, OK/Afton H.S.) started on the bump for the Crusaders and pitched five and a third solid innings before sophomore pitcher Michael Schweiss (Parker, CO/Chaparral H.S.) threw three and two third solid innings of relief for his second win of the year.  Schweiss gave up 3 hits and a run while striking out 2 before the UD bats came a live and put him in line for the win.  Martin Lopez' (Albuquerque, NM/St. Pius X H.S.) RBI single that scored freshman outfielder James Kerin (East Greenwich, RI/East Greenwich H.S.) tied the game at 5 in the top of the ninth, and freshman infielder Trevor Allred (Anchorage, AK/South Anchorage H.S.) gave Dallas the lead with an RBI single that drove in freshman outfielder Nico Caluda (New Orleans, LA/Jesuit H.S.).

UD was ahead most of the game and held a 4-1 lead after four frames before the Wolves put up 3 runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game.  Stritch then scored a run in the bottom of the eighth for the one run lead that led up to the UD heroics at the plate.  Sophomore infielder/outfielder Brian Shelburne (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth H.S.) led UD with 2 of their 8 hits and sophomore catcher/pitcher Michael Morrison (Dallas, TX/Lake Hill Prep) led the team with 2 RBI.  Freshman outfielder Adam Farris (Flower Mound, TX/Liberty Christian) and junior infielder David Rettinger (San Antonio, TX/Central Catholic H.S.) both scored 2 runs for UD.

The 5-13 baseball squad is off for almost a week before returning to San Antonio to take on the Trinity University Tigers in a three game series that starts with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 20.  The first game of the doubleheader starts at 3:00pm.  The two teams conclude the series with a nine inning game the following day that starts at 1:00pm.
