UNIVERSITY OF DALLAS ATHLETICS

Dallas Baseball Stung by Yellow Jackets

The UD baseball fell by the count of 4-0 to open the home series against the Howard Payne University. Starting pitcher junior Phil Carkhuff (Marietta, GA/The Lovett School) and reliever freshman Chase Cooper (Flower Mound, TX/Liberty Christian) combined to hold the Jackets to 4 runs through nine innings but the offense failed to kick into gear mustering only 5 hits.

Two errors also hurt the Crusaders' cause, as Carkhuff only allowed 3 earned runs while tallying 0 walks and 12 strikeouts. Cooper entered the game at the beginning of the eighth to pitch the final two innings, both of which were scoreless. The defense made a strong stand in the top of the ninth as sophomore catcher Varea Costello (Anchorage, AK/South Anchorage H.S.) made a heroic effort to hold onto the ball after receiving a strong hit at the plate. But the momentum was not enough as the team couldn't string together any offense in the final frame.

With the loss UD falls to 0-7 but will have a chance to curb their fortunes tomorrow afternoon when they wrap up the final two games of the series at home at 12:00pm and 2:30pm respectively.
