Four Set to Join Athletic Hall of Fame
The University of Dallas Athletic Department announced today that they will induct three athletes and one coach into the Athletic Hall of Fame in a ceremony on October 10, 2010. The honorees are Jon Henderson, Steve Eberhardt, Cecil Grigg, and coach Stefani Webb. With the induction of the four member 2010 class, the Hall of Fame will consist of 43 distinguished individuals. The inaugural class was inducted in February of 1998.
Jon Henderson
In the mid 1970s the University of Dallas baseball team was blessed with outstanding pitching. One of the stars on the staff was Jon Henderson. The team was the NAIA District 8 Central Zone Championships in 1974 and 1975 and the 1975 team had a team earned run average (ERA) of 2.31, a school record that still stands. His career era of 2.59 is 3rd best in school history. Overall he appeared in 29 games, 15th on the career list, and 204.2 innings, 8th for an average of 7 innings every time he took the ball. He had 11 wins for 15th on the career list with 154 strikeouts which places him 11th. In 1975 he was an All Central selection.
Coach Stefani Webb
Stefani Webb took over as the head coach of women’s soccer in 1997 and in seven years established herself as the most successful coach in school history. Her teams boasted an overall record of 91-46-6 for a winning percentage of .657 while earning two trips to the NCAA Division III tournament, three United States Collegiate Athletic Association Championships and two berths in the American Southwest Conference playoffs. The 2002 team was the first UD team to receive an NCAA postseason bid and holds the school record for goals in a season. In addition her 2002 team led NCAA Division III in scoring. The 2001 team holds the school record for most wins in a season. She also served as the men’s soccer coach, track coach and women’s lacrosse coach for brief periods.
Steve Eberhardt
In the mid 1970’s Steve Eberhardt was a pitching mainstay on the University of Dallas baseball teams that won consecutive NAIA District 8 Central Zone Championships in 1974 and 1975. The 1975 pitching staff had a team era of 2.31 which is still the school record. As the workhorse of the pitching staff he holds the school record for innings pitched in a career, 302. He is third in career strikeouts, 245, 5th in career wins, 19, and 7th in games pitched, 44 and earned run average 3.30. An All Central Zone selection in 1974 and 1975 he was also an All District choice in 1975. On 16 April 1975 he became the second pitcher in school history to throw a no hitter when he beat Texas College.
Cecil Grigg
The arrival of Cecil Grigg at the University of Dallas coincided with the arrival of legendary Coach Charles Crowley from Notre Dame in 1913. Grigg went on to star in four sports most notably football where he led the team in every offensive category during his four years. He led the 1915 team to the Independent Championship of the Southwest with a 6-1 record. The Dallas Morning News regularly referred to him as the best halfback in the Southwest. Notable single game records include six touchdowns versus Burleson College and 24 pass completions against Howard Payne University. Grigg went on to play eight seasons in the National Football League including stints with the New York Giants and Canton Bulldogs.
