Bio

Garrett Smith completed his sixth full year at the helm at the University of Dallas golf, taking over the program in March, 2016.

The 2021-22 season saw a return to a full fall and spring schedule, with the Crusaders participating in four tournaments in the fall and five in the spring, including the SCAC Championships.  Their best finish of the season came in September when they finished in second place at the John Bohmann Memorial Invite, 13 strokes behind Trinity.  The Crusaders placed sixth in the conference tournament, but had a pair of outstanding indivudual performances.  Jackson Lehner made 1st Team All-SCAC with a top five finish, and Rex oulliere made 2nd Team with a top 10 finish.

Limited to just playing tournaments in 2021 due to COVID-19 scheduling, Smith guided the men’s team in five tournaments, which had a pair of two top-three team finishes.  The most successful result for Smith's Crusaders was second place at the Rhodes Spring Collegiate, led by individual second place finisher Emilio Montalvo. The team took third at the Alamo City Classic. Smith returned six golfers, including the five participants that competed during the team’s successful 2019-20 campaign that was headlined by the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship. These student-athletes were Montalvo, Erik Hamm, Seth McNeill, Jacob Wade, Robby Evans, and Trey Schneider. Dallas would claim fourth at the Conference Championship this spring.

In 2019-20, the Crusaders completed six tournaments, four in the fall and two in a shortened spring season due to COVID-19. Smith led the men’s squad to three top-five finishes highlighted by a second place spot at the fall opener at John Bohmann Memorial Invitational.

In 2018-19, Smith guided Dallas Athletics to its first ever Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Championship on April 22-23 at Vaalar Creek Golf Club in Blanco, Texas. It was the first conference title for the men's golf program as well, who had never finished higher than fourth in the SCAC (2018). Smith was named the 2019 SCAC Coach of the Year after the team's first conference championship. Emilio Montalvo and Erik Hamm tied for second and claimed First Team All-SCAC, while Jacob Wade claimed Second Team All-SCAC and tied sixth in the historic win.

The previous week before conference, Dallas finished second at the Rhodes Collegiate Spring Classic in a field of 16 teams that featured the Crusaders defeating three teams ranked higher than them nationally. Dallas set a low three round record with an 858 at that tournament, and Montalvo broke his own record of a low three round with a score of 210.

Under Smith's tutelage, Montalvo holds a pair of individual tournament records (Low Two Rounds and Low Three Rounds) from 2019 and set the Individual Season Record for Low Average (73.69). He just missed qualifying for nationals as an individual, earned multiple SCAC Golfer of the Week awards, and sank the winning putt to lift the Crusaders to the conference title.

In 2017-18, it was another season of progress for a Crusaders team that challenged in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Championship with their best result since joining the league. Low Round totals for one, two, and three runs were achieved by both individuals and the team during consecutive seasons. The Low Average score of 305.2 for 27 rounds surpassed the previous all-time best set during Smith's first whole season.

During his first complete season in 2016-17, the team broke the Team Low Average Season Record, Low Round on two occasions, and Low Two Rounds. Under Smith's coaching, Erik Hamm notched all-conference for the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) and Thomas Schuberg was named SCAC Golfer of the week on three occasions. He won a pair of individual tournaments, while Hamm prevailed in the other as three Hendrix Duals had UD players winning.

During his tenure, the Crusaders have earned a spot on the SCAC Spring Student-Athlete Academic Honor Roll six times (2017, 2018, 2019).

With the men's team, Smith is 134-147 in matchups with other teams in tournaments which is the most wins in the program. The next highest is 61.
